Château Lafite Rothschild, Pauillac
General information:
Château Lafite Rothschild is one of the most famous and historically most important wine estates in the world. As a Premier Cru Classé in the 1855 classification for the Médoc, it is in first place and epitomises the elegance, longevity and prestige of the Bordeaux class like almost no other estate. It has been owned by the Rothschild family since 1868.
Location & Soil:
The estate is located in the Pauillac appellation on one of the highest points in the commune, on deep gravel ridges from the Günz Ice Age, which lie over a limestone bedrock. This excellent drainage and the proximity to the Gironde estuary create an ideal microclimate for the vines.
Grape varieties & wine:
The vineyard area is around 112 hectares, planted with approximately 70% Cabernet Sauvignon, 25% Merlot, 3% Cabernet Franc and 2% Petit Verdot.
The Grand Vin, Château Lafite Rothschild, epitomises the "classic" Pauillac style: not of overwhelming power, but of aristocratic refinement, grace and complexity. Its trademark is a fragrant, violet-like bouquet, coupled with aromas of cedar wood, ripe blackcurrants (cassis), fine tobacco notes and an incomparable mineral freshness. The tannins are silky, the texture exceptionally dense and supple. Lafite is a wine of great restraint in its youth, which often only reveals its full, multi-layered splendour after decades in the bottle.
Specialities:
Carruades de Lafite: The second wine, which has a higher proportion of Merlot and is more accessible. It shares the family's elegance and is itself a sought-after and highly priced wine.
Global myth & value:The name "Lafite" is a symbol of the highest status, particularly in Asia, and has made the wine a coveted collector's item and investment property.
Technology & tradition:The estate combines state-of-the-art cellar technology (e.g. a spectacular, underground circular storage cellar) with a traditional, rigorous selection process. The wine is matured in 100% new barriques from the estate's own barrel cellar.
Conclusion:
Château Lafite Rothschild represents the Apollonian, refined side of Bordeaux. Its pleasure lies less in its immediate opulence than in its nuanced development and timeless balance between fruit, acidity, tannin and aromatic complexity. It is a wine that combines history, terroir and artisanal perfection in every bottle, more than justifying its legendary status. Compared to the powerful, earthy Latour or the opulent Mouton Rothschild, Lafite remains the epitome of the elegant, fragrant and finesse-rich classic.
