🍷 Brief report: Hermannsberg Estate

Gut Hermannsberg in Niederhausen on the Naheis one of the most extraordinary wineries in Germany - not only because of its wines, but also because of its unique VDP vineyard structure. It combines over 100 years of history as a royal Prussian domain with modern, focussed Riesling artistry.

📜 History & location

The roots of the estate date back to 1902, when the Prussian state foundedthe "Königlich-Preußische Weinbaudomäne Niederhausen-Schloßböckelheim" . The aim was to create an educational and model vineyard after the phylloxera catastrophe and to revitalise viticulture on the Nahe. the first Riesling vines were planted in 1903.

The estate remained in state ownership for almost a century and was privatised in 1998. in 2009, the Reidel family acquired the estate and renamed it Gut Hermannsberg in 2010 - after the monopole vineyard in the centre of which the estate is enthroned.

📌S pecial feature: The listed Art Nouveau buildings (built 1902-1910) are a protected monument and form one of the most beautiful estates in the region .

Today, the winery cultivates 30 hectares of vines spreadacross seven terroirs .

What sets Gut Hermannsberg apart from almost all other wineries is that 100% of its vineyards are located in VDP.Grosse Lagen vineyards - a unique constellation in Germany. These include, among others:

Niederhäuser Hermannsberg (the estate's namesake monopole vineyard)
Schlossböckelheimer Kupfergrube - created on a disused copper mine
Schlossböckelheimer Felsenberg, Traiser Bastei, Niederhäuser Klamm, Altenbamberger Rotenfels, Traiser Rotenfels

Soils & terroir

The soils are characterised by extraordinary diversity: slate, loam, marl, clay, sand and volcanic components (melaphyre) provide mineral complexity and a characteristic smoky spiciness. Six of the seven terroirs are characterisedby volcanic bedrock.

Riesling dominates with around 95% of the vineyard area
Supplemented by a small area of Pinot Blanc

Style & philosophy

The philosophy is clear: Riesling as the translator of the terroir. Cellar master Karsten Peter (at the estate since 2009) and his team vinify the wines in a modern and precise way, focussing on dry white wines and a remarkable maturation period before release: some of the great growths are only released for sale after two to five years. The estate is a founding member of the VDP.

7 Terroirs Cuvée: The entry-level wine "7 Terroirs" is created from the grapes of young vines from all seven great vineyards - a cuvée that reflects the diversity of the estate.
Vinotheque & guest house: Visitors can taste the wines in a modern vinotheque and stay overnight in the estate's own guest house - nestled between steep vineyards, rugged cliffs and the Nahestrom river.
Sparkling wines: The estate also produces high-quality Riesling sparkling wines.
