Seven terroirs, one crown – The legendary rise of Gut Hermannsberg

High above the picturesque Nahe Valley stands a vineyard whose history is as steep as its vineyards: Gut Hermannsberg. It was founded in 1902 as the ‘Royal Prussian Wine-growing Estate’ – a prestigious state project intended to revive German viticulture following the devastating phylloxera crisis. Laying out the vineyards was back-breaking work: rocks had to be blasted and vast quantities of earth moved. The first Riesling vines were planted in 1903. The vineyard name ‘Kupfergrube’ still bears witness to this history today, as a significant portion of the vineyard was laid out on the site of a former copper mine.

After more than 100 years under state ownership, the estate was privatised in 2010 and renamed Gut Hermannsberg – after its largest and most famous monopoly vineyard. The new owners, Jens Reidel and Dr Christine Dinse, invested with great passion in the restoration of the listed buildings and the modernisation of the cellar facilities . In Karsten Peter, they secured the services of one of Germany’s most distinguished Riesling specialists as cellar master, who, together with his team, brings out the extraordinary potential of the historic vineyards anew year after year.

What sets Gut Hermannsberg apart from almost all other estates is its unique terroir structure: the entire vineyard area of around 30 hectares of vineyard are spread exclusively across seven vineyards classified by the VDP as ‘Große Lage’. These include world-famous names such as the Hermannsberg monopole, the legendary Kupfergrube and the Traiser Bastei . The soils are characterised by breathtaking diversity – volcanic weathered soils, porphyry, slate and Rotliegendes alternate and lend the wines their unmistakable minerality and finesse.

Today, Gut Hermannsberg is once again counted amongst the very finest estates for dry German Riesling. The wines are regularly awarded top marks by leading wine guides. Cellar master Karsten Peter sums up the estate’s philosophy perfectly: “Our greatest treasure is our vineyards. We don’t grow nice, sweet, well-behaved pretenders”. Instead, we produce elegant, purist and challenging Rieslings with rough edges – mineral masterpieces that reflect the character of their legendary terroir with breathtaking precision.
