The Château Doisy-Védrines Grand Cru Classé Sauternes 1972 is a remarkable wine from one of the most challenging vintages of the 20th century and a rare testament to the resilience of a great terroir. The estate in Barsac, which emerged from the division of the historic Doisy estate in 1851, is the largest of the three Doisy estates at 27 hectares and is situated on the highest limestone plateau in Barsac, in the immediate vicinity of the Premier Cru estates Climens and Coutet. Since 1946, the château has been owned by the Castéja family, who have developed it into one of the appellation’s leading estates.

The 1972 vintage in Bordeaux was characterised by exceptionally poor weather. Winter and spring were cold, flowering was delayed, and persistent rainfall throughout the growing season prevented the grapes from reaching phenolic ripeness. The quality was so poor that Château d’Yquem decided not to release any wine from the 1972 vintage. Many Sauternes wines were downgraded. Under these adverse conditions, only a few estates managed to produce a wine of remarkable quality – and Doisy-Védrines was among them.

The winemaking process follows the estate’s traditions: the botrytised grapes are harvested exclusively by hand and rigorously selected before being fermented in barriques. The cuvée consists predominantly of Sémillon, complemented by Sauvignon Blanc and Muscadelle. Ageing in oak lends the wine its characteristic structure and longevity.

The tasting notes paint a picture of a wine that has mastered the challenges of the vintage. The nose reveals citrus fruit and toasted aromas; on the palate, it is very smooth and possesses great ageing potential. Other descriptions highlight aromas of exotic fruits, quince and orange, with great complexity, good length and a deliciously smooth finish. The colour is likely to be a deep, mature gold with amber highlights, as is characteristic of a Sauternes over fifty years old.
