Château Doisy-Védrines Grand Cru Classé Sauternes 1971: An elegant charmer from a five-star vintage
The Château Doisy-Védrines Grand Cru Classé Sauternes 1971 is a remarkable testament to Barsac’s great sweet wine tradition and a wine that, even after more than five decades, continues to captivate with its vibrancy and charm. The estate in Barsac, which emerged from the division of the historic Doisy estate in 1851, is the largest of the three Doisy estates at 27 hectares and is situated on the limestone plateau of Haut-Barsac, in the immediate vicinity of the Premier Cru estates Climens and Coutet. The château has been owned by the Castéja family since 1851, who have developed it over generations into one of the appellation’s leading estates.
The 1971 vintage was an outstanding year in Sauternes. Michael Broadbent awarded it five stars and described it as “an excellent Sauternes vintage thanks to a pleasant, sunny summer, ideal ripening conditions and botrytis”. The winemaking process follows the estate’s traditions: the botrytised grapes are harvested exclusively by hand in several passes and rigorously selected before being fermented in barriques. The cuvée consists predominantly of Sémillon, complemented by Sauvignon Blanc and Muscadelle.
The tasting notes paint a picture of a wine at an advanced stage of maturity. The wine magazine *Vinum* describes the Doisy-Védrines from this era as “exceptionally elegant, with delicate notes of flowers and dried fruit, a hint of cocoa or truffle, and a subtle note of bitter almond on the finish”. *Die Weinwelt* describes the 1971 vintage as having aromas of ripe peaches, pineapple and guava, accompanied by dried apricots, almonds and vanilla; on the palate, notes of mango, pineapple and passion fruit, sweet yet fresh, with a concentrated flavour and balanced structure.
Today, the 1971 Château Doisy-Védrines is a sought-after rarity. For lovers of great Sauternes, it offers a rare opportunity to experience a wine that bears the hallmark of one of Barsac’s most distinguished winemaking families and has retained remarkable elegance and vitality after more than five decades of ageing.
