The 1952 Deidesheimer Kalkofen Riesling Auslese from the Dr. Bürklin-Wolf winery is an exceptional wine that embodies the quiet grandeur of a legendary vintage and the allure of one of the Palatinate’s finest vineyards. The Dr. Bürklin-Wolf winery looks back on a history spanning over 400 years, dating back to 1597 and its founder, Bernhard Bürklin. It acquired its current name in 1875 following the marriage of Dr Albert Bürklin to Luise Wolf. Since 1990, Bettina Bürklin-von Guradze has been running the estate, which comprises 84.7 hectares of vineyards – 82 per cent of which are planted with Riesling – and has established it as one of Germany’s most renowned producers. The vineyards have been cultivated biodynamically for over a decade.
At the heart of this wine lies the Deidesheimer Kalkofenvineyard , one of the smallest VDP.GROSSEN LAGEN in the Palatinate. Covering just 5 hectares, the vineyard is situated in the ‘warm hillside zone’ of the Mittelhaardt. The name derives from a lime kiln that stood here in the 15th century. As early as the Royal Bavarian vineyard classification of 1828, the Kalkofen was recognised as a ‘Erste Lage’. The soils, consisting of limestone, loam, marly clay and scattered limestone rubble, lend the wines their characteristic richness and remarkable ageing potential. Dr Bürklin-Wolf owns a 0.7-hectare plot in this prestigious vineyard.
The 1952 vintage was characterised by favourable conditions in the Palatinate. After more than seven decades of bottle ageing, this Auslese is in a condition enjoyed by only a few bottles. The colour is likely to be a deep amber to coppery gold. The nose unfolds the classic tertiary aromas of a great matured Riesling: notes of dried apricots, honey, caramel and the petrol note typical of old Palatinate Rieslings, underpinned by the mineral character of the limestone soil. On the palate, there is a harmonious balance of sweetness and acidity which, despite its age, retains a remarkable liveliness and length. The bottle is described as having a fill level of 3 cm below the capsule and an intact label – an exceptionally good state of preservation for its age.
