Hohe Domkirche – Avelsbacher Altenberg Dry Riesling 1978: A matured classic from the Saar
The 1978 Avelsbacher Altenberg Riesling (dry) from the Hohe Domkirche Trier is an impressive testament to the centuries-old winemaking tradition of the Episcopal Vineyards of Trier. The Hohe Domkirche, founded in 1851, is one of the three partners in the association formed in 1966, which also comprises the Episcopal Seminary (founded in 1773) and the Episcopal College (founded in 1840) . Today, the Episcopal Vineyards cultivate over 130 hectares of vineyards in prime locations along the Moselle, Saar and Ruwer, with Riesling being the dominant grape variety at around 90 per cent .
The Avelsbacher Altenbergvineyard is situated in the Avelsbach district of Trier and is described as a steep slope with an impressive gradient of around 85 per cent . The south-facing slopes and the specific soil conditions lend the Riesling grapes grown here their characteristic elegance and minerality . The Hohe Domkirche is the sole owner of the Altenberg, which underlines the exclusivity of this vineyard .
The 1978 vintage is now a sought-after rarity. Wines from this era were still produced at a time when ageing in oak barrels was the norm and a natural, artisanal approach to winemaking defined the understanding of quality. A Riesling of this quality, matured for almost five decades, displays a complex spectrum of aromas: Tasting notes for comparable wines from the Altenberg describe a multi-layered bouquet of citrus fruits, ripe apple, slate and a slight petrol note, whilst on the palate the wine displays an exciting dryness, a solid acid structure and remarkable freshness . The dry style of vinification lends the wine a robust character and a solid structure.
For lovers of great German Rieslings ,this Avelsbach Altenbergoffers a rare opportunity to experience an authentic piece of Saar Riesling history at its peak of maturity and to savour the exceptional quality of a winery that, like almost no other, embodies the tradition and excellence of German viticulture.
