🏰 The Egon Müller winery - a legend on the Saar (Chapter 2007)

The fundamental importance of the winery has already been described in the report on the 1979 vintage and remains unchanged: It is an international star, responsible for some of the most expensive and sought-after white wines in the world.

  • 1991s and the new millennium:By 2007, Egon Müller IV had been in charge of the estate since 1991 and had not only maintained the high standards of his father, Egon Müller III, but had further refined them.

  • Reputation: The estate had long been synonymous with the highest Riesling art and cult status. Some of the parcels in the Scharzhofberg are among the oldest and best in the entire vineyard.

🏞️ The Scharzhofberger site - the identity-forming terroir (VDP.Große Lage)

The historic centrepiece of the winery and the place of origin of this wine: The [Alt, , 27.3 你 , Müller cultivates around 8.5 of the total 27.3 hectares.

  • Soil and climate: The south-facing slopes of the Scharzhofberg consist of deep, Devonian slate weathered soil. This rock retains heat, provides excellent drainage and is the main reason for the distinctive flavour of the wines, often described as "slatey-mineral" and "smoky". The somewhat cooler microclimate on the Saar favours a long, slow ripening of the grapes and thus the development of fine aromas and a lively acidity.

☀️ The 2007 vintage - An almost perfect vintage on the Saar

The 2007 vintage on the Mosel-Saar-Ruwer was of outstanding quality and is regarded by connoisseurs as one of the best of the early 21st century:

  • Ideal conditions:a normal spring was followed by a warm, sunny summer, which ensured healthy growth of the vines. A perfect, long and sunny autumn with cool nights allowed the grapes to ripen slowly and completely without losing their characteristic acidity.

  • David Schildknecht: the renowned wine critic of the Wine Advocate, confirms this impression. He compared the 2007 Egon Müller wines with the exceptional 1997s, but found that the 2007 harvest was even more concentrated. However, the total number of bottlings was significantly smaller. This further emphasises the exclusivity of the wine.

🍇 The Auslese label - the art of perfect selection

As already mentioned in the report on the 1979 vintage, an Auslese is the result of a strict manual harvest in which only fully ripe grapes are selected. In 2007, a first-class year, this process was carried out at a particularly high level. The result is a wine with a natural, elegant sweetness that presents the terroir of the Scharzhofberg and the botrytis complexity in an intense, perfectly balanced form.

🥂 The tasting profile of the 2007 in 2026 (almost 19 years old)

With almost two decades of bottle ageing, this wine has left its youthful stage behind and developed into a complex, mature wine that has now reached its optimum drinking window. The numerous critics' reviews paint a consistent picture:

Nose (bouquet): The aromas are intense and multi-layered. In addition to classic notes of quince, yellow plums, ripe pineapple and apricot, clear notes of noble rot, honey, brown spices and caramelised fruit dominate .

  • With increasing aeration, complex, earthy flavours such as truffle and a smoky note are added, which underline the noble rot character. International critics such as John Gilman (94+ points) noted a multi-faceted aroma of peach, guava, watercress, slate and subtle hints of petrol.

Palate (flavour): The wine has a dense, almost weightless, noble character. It presents itself with a glossy, velvety texture that is characterised by a dynamic, refreshing citrus note. The fruit flavours of plum jam, pineapple and honey merge with caramel to create an almost chewy impression. Despite the creamy and sweet component, a concise, lively acidity ensures incredible freshness, balance and a clean finish. It is often described as "hard to imagine that it can get any better".

Finish: The finish is of enormous length and persistence. It is described as surprisingly long, with lingering refreshment and a hint of bitter almonds or oranges, which provides an interesting, slightly tart note and lingers on the palate for a long time.

📈 Market prices & availability 2026 - A stable, high-priced rarity

This wine is not an everyday drop, but a coveted collector's item. Its price range is broad, depending on the state of preservation, the specific bottling (standard vs. auction/gold capsule) and the bottle size. Research from May 2026 shows the following picture:

  • Average price: On international platforms, the average price for a standard 0.75l bottle is around USD 444 net. A 0.75 litre bottle was traded for around €500 at online auctions.

  • Gold capsule / auction bottling: The even more exclusive variants, such as the gold capsule, are traded at significantly higher prices. The average price for a large 0.75 litre bottle is around USD 2,690 net. The smaller 375ml half-bottle of this bottling also achieves a considerable price of around CHF 700 (approx. €730).

  • Historical auctions: Auction results show the consistency of appreciation. A lot of two standard 0.75 litre bottles (regular) was auctioned in mid-2025 for a total of €500. A 375ml gold capsule from 2007 has long since sold out. A dealer in Hong Kong is even selling a 375ml bottle of the selection (presumably without a gold capsule, as it is not specified) for the equivalent of an incredible USD 4,891; this is almost certainly the extremely rare gold capsule variant.

  • Conclusion on the 2026 market value:

    • Normal selection (0.75l): approx. 450 € to 550 €

    • Gold capsule (0.75 litre): approx. €2,500 to €3,000

    • Gold capsule (0.375 litre): approx. 750 € to 1,000 €
