Dr Hermann - Erdener Prälat Riesling Auslese Goldkapsel 2013
The Auslese from the single vineyard Erdener Prälat with the Goldkapselrating is one of Dr Hermann's great white wines. It combines the exceptional minerality of the red slate terroir with the selective hand-picking of fully ripe, predominantly noble rot grapes. The 2013 vintage provided ideal conditions for slowly ripening Rieslings with a high degree of freshness and fine flavour.
Origin and terroir
Erdener Prälat is considered one of the most exclusive sites on the Middle Moselle. Its south-west facing, steep terraces are characterised by deep, iron-rich red slate. This rock stores heat and favours a micro-networked climate that enables slow, concentrated ripening. The gold capsule characterises a strict selection of the best selection lots with particularly fine botrytis and a high degree of ripeness.
Sensory characteristics
The nose reveals a multi-layered spectrum of aromas: ripe peach, apricot and yellow mirabelle plum meet exotic notes of mango and papaya. Fine botrytis spice is evident with delicate hints of honey, saffron and orange blossom. Typical of the Prälat, a cool, mineral note of red slate, accompanied by a subtle smokiness, pervades the bouquet.
On the palate, the Auslese presents itself with an elegant balance. The precise, lively acidity carries the fine sweetness without the wine ever appearing heavy. The texture is supple, with a fine melting density, but always remains lively thanks to the typical Mosel freshness. Flavours of ripe stone fruit compote, candied lemon zest and a hint of fine spices fill the mouth. The finish is long, mineral and impressively clear.
Development and potential
With more than ten years of ageing in the bottle, this 2013 is in excellent drinking maturity. The primary fruit flavours have blended harmoniously with the first notes of ripeness without losing any of their vitality. Due to the high acidity structure and the fine botrytis extracts, the Auslese has considerable ageing potential. It will continue to grow in complexity over the next 15 to 20 years and develop flavours of dried fruit, caramel and fine wood.
Serving recommendation
Enjoy this wine at a temperature of 8-10 °C from a large white wine glass. The Auslese Goldkapsel is a versatile companion: it harmonises excellently with Asian cuisine, slightly spicy goat's cheese, foie gras or delicate desserts such as an apricot tart or apple strudel. With its balance between sweetness and acidity, it is also suitable as a stand-alone treat for special occasions.
