The Château Suduiraut Sauternes 1966 is a wine that embodies the quiet grandeur of an often-underestimated vintage. The estate in Preignac, situated immediately adjacent to the legendary Château d’Yquem, looks back on a history dating as far back as 1580, when Nicole d’Allard brought the property as part of her dowry upon her marriage to Léonard de Suduiraut. The château, which was burnt down during the Fronde uprisings and rebuilt in the 17th century, is surrounded by magnificent gardens designed by the famous landscape architect Le Nôtre for King Louis XIV. On 18 April 1855, the estate was officially classified as a Premier Cru Classé – a distinction that remains to this day.

The 1966 vintage was a year of pure, elegant wines in Bordeaux. Following a mild winter and a successful flowering period, a dry, sunny September ensured balanced ripening, whilst late summer rains provided the perfect finishing touch for the harvest. In Sauternes, however, the necessary moisture was lacking in October, which limited the development of noble rot (Botrytis cinerea) – a challenge that forced the winegrowers to exercise the strictest selection. The result was not an opulent Sauternes, but a delicate one of classical precision.

The tasting notes paint a picture of a mature wine at an advanced stage. The colour displays a distinct dark caramel hue – an unmistakable sign of its age. On the nose, notes of barley sweets and clementine dominate, underpinned by a hint of chlorine reminiscent of old Sauternes, but which blends attractively with the orange marmalade. On the palate, the wine performs significantly better than its bouquet suggests: clementine, quince, a hint of ginger and a marmalade-like finish with a delicate touch of acidity. The Wine Advocate awarded it 90 points and described it as a “nonchalant Suduiraut that punches above its weight”. Michael Broadbent awarded it four stars and described a “surprisingly deep orange-amber colour” with a “candied barley sweet bouquet and rich flavour”.

Today, the 1966 Château Suduiraut is a sought-after rarity that regularly fetches between 150 and 200 euros per bottle at auctions. For lovers of great Sauternes, it offers a rare opportunity to experience a Premier Cru that embodies the classic, understated elegance of a vintage often overshadowed by the legendary 1967 – and which is precisely where it reveals its very own charm.
