Product information

Domaine Jacques Prieur - Chambertin Clos de Bèze Grand Cru 1973.

1. Wine identification

  • Producer: Domaine Jacques Prieur (now based in Meursault and Beaune, then still a traditional family winery with a long history in the Côte de Nuits and Côte de Beaune).

  • Appellation: Chambertin Clos de Bèze - Grand Cru (commune of Gevrey-Chambertin, Côte de Nuits).

  • Vintage: 1973.

  • Grape variety: Pinot Noir.

  • Special feature:Clos de Bèze is the oldest of the Chambertin Grand Cru sites and is considered to be of equal or even finer quality than the neighbouring Chambertin.

2. Market presence & value

The Domaine Jacques Prieur Chambertin Clos de Bèze 1973 rarely appears on the market; when it does, it is usually at auction.

  • Recent auction examples:

    • In an auction at Christie's (Geneva, 2016), a single bottle of this wine realised CHF 1,175 (approx. €1,090) .

    • At Sotheby's (London, 2015), the result for a bottle was GBP 750.

  • Fill level & condition: Due to its age, a fill level below the shoulder is a warning sign; top bottles show a fill level in the upper neck or into the capsule band.

3. Historical background: Domaine Jacques Prieur

The winery is one of the most important houses in Burgundy and owns shares in several Grands Crus.

  • Ownership in 1973: In the 1970s, the Domaine was run by Jean-Pierre Prieur, who took a conservative approach to winemaking. At this time, the family already owned plots in the most prestigious sites, including Chambertin Clos de Bèze, Musigny, Montrachet and Chevalier-Montrachet.

  • Today's situation: In 2008, the Labruyère family (mayor's family from Moulin-à-Vent) took over the domaine and modernised it. Wines from the 1970s are therefore considered an expression of the traditional era before modernisation.

4. Vintage rating: 1973 in Burgundy

The 1973 vintage is often described as "secretly good" - it was overshadowed by the legendary 1972 (strong, tannic) and the 1971 (vintage of the century).

  • Weather:A changeable summer, followed by a warm, dry harvest in September. The wines were medium-bodied, with good acidity and fruit, but less structurally firm than the 1972s.

  • Ageing behaviour:Grand Crus from good sites (such as Clos de Bèze) have kept surprisingly well if stored properly. Today they show complex tertiary flavours (truffle, leather, forest floor, slightly smoky notes) and a fine, silky texture.

  • Caution: Many 1973s from poorer provenance are already oxidised or decaying.

5. Storage & drinking maturity

  • Current drinking condition:If stored optimally, the wine is now (at over 50 years of age) at or just after its peak. It should be consumed within the next 3-5 years.

  • Decisive factors:

    • Provenance: Bottles from private cellars with a constant temperature (12-14 °C) and high humidity are rare and correspondingly valuable.

    • Fill level: For a bottle of this age, a high fill level (in the neck or in the capsule) is a decisive quality feature.

  • Serving temperature:16-18 °C, decanting is recommended to separate the sediment. As the structure is fragile, the wine should not be aerated for hours.

6. Summary

The Domaine Jacques Prieur Chambertin Clos de Bèze 1973is a rare representative of the traditional era of one of the great Burgundian names. With good provenance, the 1973 vintage offers a surprisingly elegant drinking experience with complex tertiary flavours. For collectors, the wine is a rarity; the value depends largely on the fill level, label condition and fully documented storage history.

Recommendation: Before purchasing, the fill level should be checked and, if possible, the origin of the cellar clarified. At an auction, the lot is only recommended with a reliable description of its condition.
