Domaine G. Roumier – Corton-Charlemagne ‘Grand Cru’ 1983
The Domaine G. Roumier Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru 1983 is an exceptional and rare white Burgundy that impressively highlights the artistry of this legendary Chambolle-Musigny-based estate. Founded in 1924 by Georges Roumier and now run by his grandson Christophe Roumier, the Domaine ranks among the most renowned estates in Burgundy. The Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru is the estate’s only white wine vineyard and is made from the Chardonnay grape variety.
The Domaine Georges Roumier’s vineyard plot is situated in the commune of Pernand-Vergelesses on the western slope of the hill. It lies at an altitude of 280 to 305 metres, with an average gradient of 15 per cent. The soil consists of clay-rich material over Callovian limestone. The west-facing aspect ensures late ripening of the grapes, which lends the wine a distinctive structure and straightforward character .
The 1983 vintage in Burgundy was exceptional for white wines: following a cool spring, warm weather did not set in until the end of May, resultingin rich and intense white wines. This vintage also marks an important moment in the estate’s history, as the Roumier family have been bottling the entire harvest themselves since the 1983 vintage.
In the glass, the wine presents a pale white colour with slightly greenish highlights. The bouquet is highly complex, evoking dried apricot, quince, acacia blossom, hawthorn and delicate honeyed notes. On the palate, the wine is solid and well-structured with good acidity. Its pure minerality is a defining characteristic and delights lovers of great Burgundian white wines. The wine possesses an impressive directness and structure, making it an exceptional example of its appellation.
Due to its structure and density , this Grand Cru requires longer ageing to reach its full potential. The estate recommends allowing the wine to maturefor at least five years. For the 1983 vintage, this means that it is now in an excellent drinking window and is displaying its complex aromas and mineral structure in all their splendour. It is an ideal example of the exceptional quality and great ageing potential inherent in Burgundy’s great white wines.
