Tasting note: Château Lafite Rothschild 1875

(Pauillac, Bordeaux, France)

Appearance:
The colour of the wine is a delicate, translucent garnet red with distinct amber tones and a narrow, brick-red rim - typical of a Bordeaux over 140 years old. The clarity is remarkable, indicating careful ageing.

Nose:
The aromas are characterised by tertiary nuances: leather, old tobacco, damp forest soil and a delicate note of dried mushrooms. A subtle fruitiness with hints of dried cherries and plums resonates in the background, accompanied by a mineral elegance (graphite) and a hint of cedar wood - a final echo of the former complexity.

Palate:
The entry is surprisingly lively for its age, with a silky texture and fully integrated tannins. The acidity is subtle but sufficient to retain structure. Flavours of dried herbs, tobacco leaves and a wafer-thin sweetness of sultanas dominate. Despite the advanced maturity, the wine shows amazing balance, with the alcoholic warmth (probably around 11-12%) gently integrated.

Finish:
Long-lasting and thought-provoking, with an echo of iron, fine smoke and a crumbling earthiness. The final spiciness is reminiscent of white pepper - a final flash of vitality.

Overall impression:
A historic jewel that impresses less with its power than with its filigree complexity. The 1875 Lafite is a contemporary witness of the late 19th century, an era in which phylloxera threatened the vineyards of Europe. It is possible that the grapes still come from original, ungrafted vines - a rarity. Today, the wine presents itself as a relic that has retained its dignity and charm despite its age.

Notes on provenance:
Perfect storage conditions (cool, dark, constant humidity) are crucial for a bottle like this. Possible oxidation notes or a "stale" character would be possible if stored improperly.

Recommendation:
Best enjoyed neat and at room temperature (16-18 °C), accompanied by minimalist pairings such as walnuts, mild Comté cheese or dark chocolate.

Rating:
★★★★★ (historical value) / ★★★☆☆ (current drinking pleasure)
A wine that inspires not so much sensory ecstasy as reverence for time - a must for collectors and history enthusiasts.
