The Durbacher Schloss Staufenberg Riesling Auslese VDP.ERSTE LAGE 2022 from the Markgraf von Baden winery is an outstanding example of the top quality of Baden Rieslings from one of Europe’s most traditional winemaking dynasties. The Markgraf von Baden winery looks back on a history spanning over 900 years – since 1112, the Margrave family has played a decisive role in shaping German and Baden viticulture through legislation, modernisation and innovation . With 111.30 hectares of vineyards, it is one of the largest private VDP estates in Germany and has been a member of the Association of German Prädikat Wine Estates since 2012 .
The Durbacher Schloss Staufenbergvineyard is situated in the Ortenau region and is inextricably linked to the history of the estate. As early as 1782, Margrave Carl Friedrich had the ‘Ur-Klingelberger’ Riesling grown here as a single variety – ‘Klingelberger’ is the local name for Riesling . The steep slopes of the Schlossberg, with gradients of up to 60 per cent, and the warm, mild climatic conditions of the Ortenau region create ideal conditions for viticulture . The soils are characterised by weathered granite, which gives the wines their distinctive mineral character .
The VDP.ERSTE LAGE classification represents the second-highest level in the VDP vineyard pyramid and guarantees that the grapes come exclusively from a single, outstanding vineyard and have been vinified according to strict quality criteria. The ‘Auslese’ classification as a Prädikat level means that only fully ripe, selectively harvested grapes have been used, which lends the wine exceptional concentration and depth.
The 2022vintage presents a light, luminous colour. On the nose, the wine displays the typical aromas of a great Riesling: ripe peach, lime and grapefruit, accompanied by a delicate minerality . On the palate, it impresses with its elegant structure, lively acidity and a long, harmonious finish . The 375-ml bottle is ideal for sharing as a couple or as a special accompaniment to festive occasions.
