Nicolas Feuillatte – Palmes d’Or Brut 2004: A prestige cuvée at the peak of its maturity
The Palmes d’Or Brut 2004 from Nicolas Feuillatte is the house’s prestigious vintage cuvée and epitomises the pinnacle of the renowned house’s champagne-making artistry. Nicolas Feuillatte, founded in 1972 and based in Chouilly at the foot of the Côte des Blancs, now brings together 4,500 winegrowers and vinifies the harvest from 2,200 hectares spread across the entire Champagne region . The Palme d’Or is the house’s flagship champagne and is produced as a vintage champagne only in exceptional vintages .
The 2004 vintage cuvée is a blend of 40 per cent Chardonnay – from Montgueux and the Grands Crus of Chouilly, Cramant and Le Mesnil-sur-Oger – and 60 per cent Pinot Noir, sourced exclusively from Grand Cru plots . This blend gives the wine a unique balance: the Pinot Noir lends structure and body, whilst the Chardonnay provides elegance and finesse . The wine was aged for eight years in the cellar, which gives the champagne its exceptional complexity .
The bouquet of the 2004 Palme d’Or is intense and multi-layered: white flowers, sour cherry and pastry-like aromas dominate the nose, accompanied by vanilla and yellow fruits such as pear tart, as well as a subtle spiciness from coriander seeds . On the palate, it is round and buttery, with a full, creamy texture that is nonetheless supported by lively acidity . The minerality lends the wine remarkable precision and a long, lingering finish . The fine effervescence underlines the elegance of this Champagne .
Specialist critics awarded the 2004 vintage top marks: Meininger Online awarded 93 points and praised its dense, fruity yet juicy texture . Falstaff awarded the rosé version of the same vintage 92 points and described a delicately herbally spiced nose with red wild berries and a juicy palate . The champagne reached its optimal drinking window between 2020 and 2025 and is now at the peak of its maturity – an elegant, first-class taste experience.
