Tasting note: Winzergenossenschaft Kallstadt Weinstrasse - Kallstadter Steinacker Riesling 1959
Colour:
A brilliant amber gold with copper reflections and a hint of olive green depth at the rim. Despite six decades of ageing, the wine shows amazing clarity and lively glints of gentle oxidation.
Nose:
A complex, tertiary bouquet dominated by intense petrol notes, honeycomb and dried herbs (chamomile, thyme), with aromas of overripe apricots, candied lemon peel and a waxy texture unfolding beneath. Slightly oxidative accents of roasted almonds and caramel blend harmoniously with the mineral base of slate and pebbles. A pale floral note (faded lime blossom) is reminiscent of the wine's youth.
Palate:
On the palate, the wine surprises with an elegant balance between residual sweetness and a slender but present acidity. The texture is silky and oily, carried by flavours of preserved quinces, dried pears and a hint of turmeric. The mineral character (salty stone notes, rock dust) lends the wine structure and freshness, while subtle spice (ginger) emphasises the maturity.
Finish:
The finish is long and persistent, characterised by a salty-bitter minerality (grapefruit peel) and a reverberation of petrol, honey and smoky slate. The sweetness dissolves gently, leaving behind a cool, almost metallic freshness that invites reflection.
Overall impression:
The Kallstadter Steinacker Riesling 1959 is a fascinating testimony to the Palatinate art of winemaking in the 1950s. The name "Steinacker" aptly refers to the mineral-rich, stony site, which lends the wine a remarkable straightforwardness and freshness despite the warm vintage. Although tertiary flavours dominate, the balance of acidity and residual sweetness and the sheer complexity make it a jewel for lovers of historic Rieslings. A wine that overcomes transience and convinces with poetic stillness.
Rating:★★★★☆ (4/5 - A ripe, mineral-elegant Riesling that combines the strengths of the vintage and the terroir. Impressive vitality despite its age).
Tip:
As with all wines of this era, ageing history is crucial. This note is based on an intact example with clear provenance and no oxidative breaks.
Context:
Vintage 1959:A warm, sunny vintage that led to ripe, alcohol-accentuated wines in the Palatinate. Late harvests like this one benefited from the higher residual sugar as a natural preservative.
Steinacker:A historical vineyard designation ("stony field") that refers to mineral-rich soils of weathered slate and limestone - ideal for structured, long-lived Rieslings.
Winegrowers' co-operatives of the 1950s:Pragmatically produced wines that nevertheless developed surprising depth and ageing potential, especially in stony sites.
Style:Honest, technically unpretentious wines with emphasised minerality are typical of the time. Here, rustic charm is combined with unexpected finesse.
