Tasting note: Winzergenossenschaft Kallstadt Weinstrasse - Kallstadter Knobert Riesling 1959
Colour:
An intense amber gold colour with slightly greenish shimmering reflections, typical of mature Rieslings. The colour indicates advanced maturity, but still shows an astonishing freshness in depth.
Nose:
A ripe, multi-layered bouquet with striking tertiary aromas: petrol notes dominate, accompanied by honeycomb, dried apricots and a delicate waxiness. Underneath, nuances of overripe lemon peel, candied ginger and a mineral base (damp slate) resonate. Slight oxidative notes (walnut, hazelnut) betray the age, but blend harmoniously into the overall picture.
Palate:
On the palate, the wine surprises with a lively, albeit more subtle acidity structure that balances the sweet impression of honeydew melon and cooked pears. The texture is silky-soft, with a slight roughness on the finish, reminiscent of ripe apple with skin. The minerality (pebbles, salt) remains present and gives the wine a pleasant tension.
Finish:
The finish is medium-long and characterised by a salty-bitter note reminiscent of grapefruit peel and a hint of ripe chamomile. The petrol and honey flavours fade slowly, leaving behind a pleasant earthiness.
Overall impression:
The Kallstadter Knobert Riesling 1959 is a fascinating relic from an era in which winegrowers' cooperatives often created surprisingly long-lived wines. Despite its age, the wine shows remarkable vitality, with the typical ageing notes of Riesling (petrol, honey) to the fore. Although the acidity is restrained, it still carries the complex palette of flavours. A wine that is more of a historical curiosity than a powerful flavour experience - a piece of contemporary history in a glass.
Rating:★★★☆☆ (3/5 - An interesting, mature Riesling with historical charm, but whose best days are probably behind it. Nevertheless, a rare experience for lovers of old wines).
Note: For wines of this age from co-operative production, the storage history is crucial. This note is based on a well-preserved example that shows no strong oxidative off-notes.
Context:
The Palatinate (then still "Rheinpfalz") was known in the 1950s for rustic but often long-lived Rieslings.
The 1959 vintage in Germany was warm and sunny, which led to ripe, alcohol-emphasised wines - in Riesling, this can reduce the acidity, which impairs longevity.
