Willi Schäfer - Graacher Himmelreich Riesling Beerenauslese 1976
The 1976 Riesling Beerenauslese from the Graacher Himmelreich vineyard of the Willi Schäfer winery is one of the outstanding rarities in Mosel wine history. The extremely hot and dry summer weather of the 1976 vintage led to exceptionally early ripening and concentrated must weights, which could be ideally utilised for the selection of noble rot berries, especially in the steep slate parcels of the Himmelreich.
Appearance:
In the glass, the wine has a deep, golden yellow to amber colour with orange reflections. Despite its age, it appears clear and brilliant, with only a slight, characterful cloudy colour indicating the slow, natural ageing in the bottle.
Nose:
The aromatic nuances are of impressive complexity and density. Ripe peach and apricot compote meet pronounced notes of noble rot - candied citrus fruits, honeycomb and exotic spices such as saffron. Behind this, mineral slate aromas and fine tertiary flavours of caramel, pastry and a hint of ripe amber unfold.
Palate:
The 1976 Beerenauslese is velvety and melting on the palate, with an almost creamy texture. The residual sweetness is still high, but is perfectly balanced by the lively, still noticeable acidity structure. The fruit is reminiscent of dried mangoes, honeydew melon and candied oranges. The typical "Riesling graveyard flavour" (petrol) is subtly and discreetly woven in, as is a light spiciness of vanilla pods and cinnamon.
Finish:
The finish is extremely long, warm and complex. A hint of smoked almonds and delicate marzipan lingers, accompanied by the elegant minerality typical of old Mosel Rieslings. The sweetness slowly subsides, leaving a feeling of density and maturity.
Conclusion:
The Willi Schäfer Beerenauslese 1976 from the Graacher Himmelreich is a wine of monumental longevity and depth. More than four decades after the harvest, it is not tired, but at the peak of its tertiary development. A rare treat for lovers of great, noble sweet Moselle Rieslings, in which the power of the extreme vintage is combined with the elegance of the site and the craftsmanship of the winery to create an unforgettable experience.
