Weingut Keller - Mölsheim Zellerweg Am Schwarzen Herrgott Pinot Noir GG Grosses Gewächs dry 2023, Rheinhessen

Introduction: A look into the future

This wine is a bold statement in one of the most difficult vintage tests of the century. The 2023 Keller Pinot Noir from the "Am Schwarzen Herrgott" vineyard is not a wine for immediate consumption, but a fascinating snapshot of an extremely young, monumental talent under extreme pressure. It provides a unique insight into Keller's philosophy of raw material selection and vinification under the toughest conditions.

Sensory description (Youthful stage - analysis of a rough diamond)

Please note: This wine is extremely young and will change dramatically over the coming years. A sensory evaluation can only outline its current state and potential.

  • Colour:
A very pale, almost translucent light ruby red with bluish-purple reflections. The colour reveals the coolness of the vintage and a possibly very careful extraction.

  • Nose:
The bouquet is restrained, highly concentrated and of an almost nervous intensity. It is characterised less by opulent fruit and more by primary aromas, minerality and austerity:

    • Bright, seasonal fruit: redcurrant, sour cherry, unripe blueberry, wild strawberry.

    • Vegetal & spicy notes: A strong impression of red pepper, dried herbs (thyme, rosemary), pepper and a distinct mineral-slate note.

    • Wood:Very restrained, at most a hint of fresh, untoasted oak (if used) or purely the flavour of the grape itself.

    • The nose is closed, taut and requires plenty of time and oxygen.

  • Palate:
The impression of an extremely linear, straightforward and highly nervous wineis confirmed on the palate .

    • The acidity is the defining element: it is steep, laser-like and of great length. It gives the wine an electric tension that is almost painfully beautiful and dominates the still slender fruit.

    • The tanninsare fine, but firm and slightly grippy. They are not yet integrated and leave an astringent, dry impression.

    • The flavour follows the nose with notes of sour cherry, red pepper and damp stones.

    • The texture is lean, almost bony, with a medium body.

    • The finish is surprisingly long, characterised by this acid-driven minerality and a peppery spiciness.

Vintage & location

  • Vintage 2023 in Germany: Widely regarded as one of the greatest challenges of recent decades. A cool, wet summer with a late infestation of downy mildew (Peronospora) led to greatly reduced yields and enormous selection pressure. Only the healthiest grapes from the best sites with perfect exposure were harvested. The wines are characterised by extremely high acidity, a lean texture, low alcohol and a wild, tart and fruity aroma. They are classic "acid vintages" with high ripening potential but difficult youth.

  • Am Schwarzen Herrgott" site (Mölsheim): One of the most renowned Pinot Noir sites in Rheinhessen. The colourful sandstone (red sandstone) soils with a limestone content warm up well and ensure a special mineral finesse and spiciness in the wines. In contrast to the limestone sites (such as Morstein), they often produce somewhat softer, more accessible Pinot Noirs that are ready to drink earlier - a character that is particularly exciting in the wild 2023.

Drinking maturity & ageing potential - a forecast

  • Current state: The wine is absolutely closed and not intended for drinking. It is in a "deep sleep". Opening it now is purely for analytical curiosity.

  • Recommended drinking window (speculation based on structure):

    • Earliest access: Not before 2028 (5 years from vintage).

    • First optimal window: 2030 - 2035.

    • Main drinking window: 2035 - 2045.

    • Cellaring potential:20-25 years with optimal cellaring . The key question is whether enough fruit will develop to support the monumental acidity structure in the long term. The best bottles could develop into fascinating, classic and filigree wines.

Rating & Recommendations

Potential rating: 93-96?/100 points
(The range is extremely wide and depends entirely on the development in the bottle. The score recognises the craftsmanship under the most difficult conditions and the recognisable potential).

Recommendations:

  • Storage: Store in a dark, cool (12-14°C) and vibration-free place. This wine needs absolute rest.

  • Future handling: If enjoyed in the recommended window, begin with careful decanting (1-2 hours).

  • Serving temperature: Then at 14-15°C.

  • Food pairing: In the future with fine, not too fatty dishes: Poultry, veal, game birds, mushroom risotto.

Conclusion

The Keller "Am Schwarzen Herrgott" GG 2023 is a fascinating and at the same time unsettling wine document. It is the essence of an extreme vintage, filtered through the rigorous selection of a top winemaker. It shows no opulent beauty, but rather the naked, structural architecture of a potentially great wine. For the collector, it is a high-risk but potentially very rewarding long-term investment in Keller's philosophy of terroir truth. For the connoisseur, it is a test of patience of at least a decade. This is not a wine for everyone, but a monument to overcoming an almost impossible wine year.
