Weingut Keller - Frauenberg Pinot Noir GG dry 2023

1. winery & philosophy:
The Keller winery in Flörsheim-Dalsheim (Rheinhessen) is one of the world's most respected German wine producers. While it first became famous for its legendary Rieslings, the family under Klaus Peter and now Julia Keller has also set standards with its Burgundies (Pinot Noir & Chardonnay). The philosophy is characterised by absolute quality standards: minimum yield, perfect grape health, selective harvesting and gentle, precise vinification. The wines strive for the greatest possible transparency of the terroir and mineral depth.

2nd vineyard: "Frauenberg"
The Frauenbergis one of the most famous single vineyards in Rheinhessen and the centrepiece of Keller's red wine production. The soils consist of calcareous marl and clay, interspersed with fossil-rich marine deposits. This geological formation gives the wines an unmistakable mineral structure, powerful texture and enormous longevity. The Frauenberg is predestined for deep, complex Pinot Noirs that represent the Burgundian "Côte" rather than the classic "Pinot image" of Germany.

3rd harvest year 2023:
2023 was a heterogeneous but overall very good yearin Rheinhessen . A cool, wet early summer led to prolonged flowering, followed by a warm, dry late summer and autumn. The harvest took place late. This allowed for slow, physiological ripening with a good acid structure. The best wines, especially from top sites such as Frauenberg and with the strictest selection (as at Keller), show pronounced freshness, elegant fruit and fine tannins with a more moderate alcohol content than 2022. 2023 promises classic, easy-drinking wines rich in finesse.

4. estimated sensory profile (pre-arrival / early indication):
Based on Keller's unmistakable style and vineyard characteristics:

  • Colour: Medium to deep ruby red.

  • Nose: Extremely complex and multi-layered. Not primarily opulent fruit, but a mixture of fine red berries (cool raspberry, ripe cherry), underlaid with clear earthy, mineral aromas(chalk, wet stone, delicate mushroom notes). There are also spicy components (clove, sandalwood, a hint of smoke) and a delicate floral note.

  • Palate: The great strength lies in the mouthfeel and structure, with a silky, densely woven yet feather-light body. The acidity is lively and carries the wine, the tannins are fine-grained and supple, but present and of great length. The flavour follows the nose: precise fruit, a dominant mineral core (that characteristic "cellar slate/limestone"), and a salty, incredibly persistent note on the finish.

  • Overall impression: A monumental but never heavy Pinot Noir, embodying elegance through structure and concentration through transparency. It is less a fruit wine than a wine of place and soil - intellectual, captivating and of great refinement.

5. assessment & potential:

  • Classification: GG= Grosses Gewächs. This is the highest quality level for dry wines from classified Erste Lage sites in the VDP. It guarantees limited yields, manual harvesting and longer maturation.

  • Drinking window:These wines are designed for extreme longevity. Due to its more accessible tannins and freshness, the 2023 will give pleasure earlier than more powerful vintages, but will only develop its full potential with time.

    • Estimated development: from 2028/2030

    • Optimal drinking window: 2033 - 2045+

  • Vintage character: At Keller, 2023 probably produces one of the most classic, finesse-rich and easy-drinking Frauenbergs of recent years, less powerful than 2022 or 2020, but with great lines and precision.

  • Style:Absolute top class. Internationally comparable to the best Grand Cru Burgundies, but with the unmistakable mineral fingerprint of the Rheinhessen limestone.

6. conclusion:
The Weingut Keller Frauenberg Spätburgunder GG 2023 promises to be an outstanding, world-class wine. It is the perfect synthesis of the cooler, finesse-rich 2023 vintage, the unique mineral terroirof the Frauenberg and Keller's masterful signature. For collectors and connoisseurs, this is a reference for German Pinot Noir and a worthwhile purchase with excellent ageing potential. The wine will offer intellectual satisfaction and long-lasting enjoyment.

Note: This is an early assessment prior to bottling (barrel tasting). The final profile may be slightly refined through barrel ageing and bottling (expected 2025). Demand will far exceed the quantity available.
