Keller Frauenberg Spätburgunder GG 2009: Monumental warmth on shell limestone
While the Dalsheimer Bürgel with its cool red sandstone terroir produces fine Pinot Noirs, the Frauenberg epitomises the powerful, sun-drenched soul of Pinot Noir from Rheinhessen. The Keller Frauenberg Spätburgunder GG 2009from this exceptional terroir is a wine of rare depth, ripe opulence and mineral character - a masterpiece by Klaus Peter Keller that pours the sun of the 2009 vintage of the century into a form of Burgundian elegance and Rhine-Hessian intensity.
The terroir: Frauenberg - a shell limestone monument to warmth
The site: The Frauenberg near Flörsheim-Dalsheim is one of the warmest sites in Rheinhessen (south-south-west facing). This location combines maximum sunshine with excellent drainage.
The soil: The foundation is formed by deep, calcareous shell limestone(Tertiary), often with a loess layer and marly components. This mineral-rich, heat-retaining soil promotes deep-rooted vines, concentrated flavours and a powerful but fine-meshed tannin structure. It gives the wine its characteristic mineral salinity, density and long-lasting structure - a Rhine-Hessian analogue to the great Cortons.
Climate:The site captures the sun of the Upper Rhine Graben, but retains an invigorating freshness due to the altitude and chalky subsoil.
The 2009 vintage: Plenty of sunshine & perfect ripeness
2009 was one of the warmest and driest vintages in Germany in recent decades (similar to 2003 and 2018). Ideal conditions for Pinot Noir on the Frauenberg:
Complete physiological ripeness: core-healthy grapes with optimally developed phenols (tannins, colouring, aromas) and high sugar potential.
Concentration & extract: The dryness led to smaller berries and high concentration.
Cellar challenge:The art lay in taming the natural fullness and power, preserving the acid structure and not allowing the mineral character of the terroir to be overshadowed by the sun. Precise work in the vineyard and cellar was crucial.
Keller's philosophy: Precision for terroir transparency
Biodynamics (Demeter): Living soils, vital vine wood as a basis.
Extreme selection: Only perfect grapes from the core parcels of the Frauenberg are used for the GG. Hand-picked.
Minimalist ageing: Predominantly large, neutral wooden barrels(barrels). The aim is purity of fruit and mineral clarity, not wood flavour. Very sparing use of new barriques, spontaneous fermentation with natural yeasts, careful maceration, long maturation in the cellar before bottling (several years).
In the glass (2024): Ripe splendour with a mineral backbone
After 15 years in the bottle, the Frauenberg GG 2009 shows all its majesty and harmony:
Colour: Deep garnet red with a delicate brick edge - an expression of perfect maturity.
Nose: An overwhelmingly complex, warm and deep bouquet, dominated by ripe dark fruit: Stewed plums, black cherries, cassis, thickened blackberry. A strong, salty-mineral vein (chalk, wet pebbles, shell limestone) and an intense spicy-heatednote (pepper, liquorice, cedar wood, fine smoke) unfold underneath. Tertiary flavours of truffle, leather, tobacco and a noble animal nuance (game) lend tremendous depth. The nose is opulent, but never heavy or overripe - the minerality and a cool floral trace (violets) keep the balance.
Palate: The entry is dense, juicy and velvety in texture. The fullness of the vintage is unmistakable, but is immediately framed by three pillars:
Finely spun but present tannins: silky integration, giving powerful structure without astringency.
Surprisingly lively acidity: fresher than expected, runs through the wine like an electrifying thread and carries the fruit.
Dominant minerality: Salty, chalky notes (chalk, slate) and an earthy spiciness decisively characterise the mid-palate.
The ripe fruit is omnipresent, but is dominated by the mineral power and complex flavour of age. The texture is dense, oily and velvety, but surprisingly floating thanks to the acidity and minerality. Power and elegance are in perfect harmony.
Length: The finish is monumentally long(minutes long). Reverberations of ripe plums, cassis, pepper, damp limestone, truffles and a lingering salty note. The acidity lends an invigorating freshness to the very last finish.
Maturation potential & drinking recommendation:
Current (2024): The wine is at the peakof its drinking maturity. It combines the complexity of ripeness of a warm vintage with the structural integrity of the Frauenberg terroir and Keller's precision. The tannins are soft as butter, the acidity perfectly integrated.
Decant: Be sure to decant for 1.5-2 hours! This opens up the complex bouquet completely and harmonises the texture.
Long-term: Stored at 12-14°C, it has the potential for another 10-15+ years. The acidity and mineral framework are intact. It will develop even more "umami" depth and harmonious fusion.
Temperature: 16-17°C - warmth allows the complexity to come into its own.
Conclusion: A German Pinot Noir monument of rare greatness
The Keller Frauenberg Spätburgunder GG 2009 is more than a great wine - it is an ode to the sun, the shell limestone and Klaus Peter Keller's art of winemaking. It takes the immense power and ripeness of the 2009 vintage and moulds it into a work of Burgundian noblesse and Rheinhessen intensity through the cool mineral backbone of the Frauenberg and precise ageing.
It stands in stark contrast to the filigree Bürgel 2008, but also to the more accessible Bürgel 2009: concentrated power, depth and an almost massive mineral presence prevail here, always carried by a velvety texture and the elegance of a great Pinot Noir. It proves that German Pinot Noirs can not only achieve maturity in warm vintages on a magnificent terroir, but also tremendous complexity, freshness and longevity.
A Grosses Gewächs in the absolute top range- a wine for connoisseurs, collectors and those moments that call for a monumental, mature and at the same time lively red wine experience. It crowns the Pinot Noir collection of the Keller winery and is an indisputable piece of German wine history. A triumph of terroir and craftsmanship.
