Weingut Johannishof - Johannisberger Riesling Trockenbeerenauslese 1994, Rheingau, Germany
Introduction: The heritage of the monastery in its sweetest form
The Johannishof wine estatein Johannisberg is one of the most traditional and renowned estates in the Rheingau, with a history dating back to the 12th century. It stands for a classic, long-lasting style that is true to the terroir. The 1994 vintage was an outstanding, concentrated vintage for noble sweetnessin the Rheingau, which was somewhat overshadowed by the great heat vintages of 1989/90 and the perfect 1993, but produced wines of exceptional density and acidity. A Trockenbeerenauslese (TBA)from this year from Johannishof therefore promises a noble, profound and long-lasting flavour experience from the classic Rheingau school.
Sensory description (with perfect storage)
After 30 years, this TBA has transformed its youthful, often impenetrable sweetness into a complex, multi-layered and fully mature personality.
Colour
A deep, radiant mahogany gold to old gold with amber-coloured reflections. The colour shows the intense concentration and advanced maturity.
Nose
The bouquet is intense, complex and characterised by a beguiling blend of noble rot, oxidation maturity and mineral depth.
Concentrated dried fruit: Raisin mustard, date jam, dried figs, prune purée, preserved apricots.
Noble oxidation (rancio) & botrytis: Precious notes of walnut, hazelnut, honeycomb, beeswax, Oloroso sherry and a noble mushroomy botrytis note.
Mineral core: The classic Rheingau minerality shines through as a cool, stony or graphite undertone that lends structure and freshness to the lush sweetness.
Spicy & exotic: Ginger, saffron, carambola, a hint of bitter orange.
Palate
On the palate, the wine is a paradox of extreme concentration and floating lightness, carried by lively acidity.
Texture: Fat, oily, syrupy and of infinite density, but never sticky or heavy thanks to the brilliant acidity . It envelops the palate like liquid velvet.
Acidity: The absolute secret of its greatness and longevity, the acidity of the 1994 vintage is still electrically alive, cutting through the sweetness like a diamond and giving the wine transcendent tension, freshness and sheer endless length. It is a lifesaver.
Flavour: An orchestrally powerful confirmation of the nose: a symphony of sultanas, nuts, honey, exotic spices and a salty minerality.
Sweetness: The sweetness is not a simple sugary sweetness, but a flavour dimension of concentrated fruit, warmth and infinite complexity.
Finish: Eternallylong, complex and versatile. The aftertaste of walnut, honey, saffron, orange peel and a salty stoniness can last for minutes.
Vintage & terroir
1994 vintage in the Rheingau
An outstanding, very concentrated vintage for noble sweetness. A warm, dry autumn after an average summer created ideal conditions for noble rot while maintaining very good acidity. The TBAs from this vintage are famous for their density, complexity and enormous ageing potential.
The terroir of Johannishof (Johannisberg)
The Johannishof vineyards (including Johannisberger Hölle, Klaus and Schwarzenstein) lie on the clay-slate and phyllite soils with clay content that are typical of Johannisberg .
These give the Rieslings a combined strength and mineral finesse, which is also evident in the sweet wines in the form of structural depth and saline underlining.
The classic Johannishof signature
Traditional approach: harvest in several stages, spontaneous fermentation, long ageing in large wooden barrels.
The aim is to produce balanced, storable wines that harmoniously combine the elegance of the Rheingau and the sweetness of the noble rot.
Maturity, condition & risk
Current drinking maturity
The wine has reached its long-awaited optimum plateau. The tertiary flavours are fully developed, the acidity is intact. It is now at the peak of its complexity.
Critical condition criteria
Provenance: Decisive. Stored absolutely cool (10-12°C), dark and vibration-free for life.
Fill level: Must be"high shoulder" or better.
Cork: A weak point after 30 years.
Risk on opening
Medium to high. The risk of over-oxidation or cork defects is present in a wine of this age, but lower than in a dry wine due to the robust structure of a TBA.
Rating & recommendations
Rating (for a perfect bottle): 95-97/100 points
A TBA of absolute world class and typical Rheingau elegance. It combines the concentrated sweetness of the vintage with the classic balance and mineral depth that Johannishof stands for.
Recommendations for the ritual of enjoyment
Treatment: Do not decant. Pour carefully, separate from the deposit if necessary.
Serving temperature: 10-12°C. Never colder.
Glass: A medium-sized, tulip-shaped dessert wine glass.
Accompaniment: Alone, as a meditation. Possible, discreet accompaniments:
Foie gras (classic).
Strong blue cheese (Roquefort).
Simple, dry almond or nut biscuits.
Pure, in silence and concentration.
Conclusion
The Johannishof Riesling Trockenbeerenauslese 1994 is a wine of great nobility and timeless beauty. It is not an overwhelming powerhouse, but a profound, complex and well-balanced noble sweet wine that presents the elegance of the Rheingau in its most concentrated form. This wine is the result of a great vintage and the patient, traditional work of one of the great Rheingau estates. Opening a bottle is a special moment and a rewarding experience for any lover of classic German sweet wines. A jewel with a past and a future.
