Weingut Schloss Reinhartshausen: Summary
Introduction & Location
Weingut Schloss Reinhartshausen, one of the oldest and most renowned wineries in Germany, is located in Eltville am Rhein in the Rheingau. Known for its premium Rieslings, the estate cultivates around 80 hectares of vineyards, including historic sites such as Marcobrunn, one of the most famous single vineyard Riesling sites in the world.
History of the estate
Founded in 1337 as a monastery vineyard, it became a centre of viticulture under Prussian nobility in the 19th century. The eponymous castle, an imposing estate with a hotel and museum, reflects the aristocratic past.
Vineyards & terroir
The vineyards stretch along the Rhine and benefit from the unique microclimate: south-facing slopes, mineral-rich soils (including slate, clay and gravel) and the river characterise the terroir. In addition to the monopole Marcobrunn, Erbacher Hohenmorgen and Eltviller Sonnenbergare among the top sites. The focus is on Riesling (80 %).
Winemaking philosophy
Schloss Reinhartshausen combines traditional craftsmanship with modern technology. Since 2020, the winery has switched to certified organic cultivation, accompanied by sustainable practices such as greening and biodiversity. Vinification takes place in stainless steel tanks, large wooden barrels or barriques, depending on the wine line.
Wine portfolio
VDP classification: As a member of the Association of German Prädikat Wine Estates (VDP), the estate produces top-class wines in the categories of estate wines, local wines, Erste Lagen and Große Lagen (e.g. Marcobrunn GG).
Specialities: Fine dry Rieslings, storable Pinot Noirs, noble sweet Auslese wines as well as ice wines and traditionally matured sparkling wines.
Historical wines: The Museum Collection presents vintages dating back to the 19th century.
Tourism & culture
The estate is a cultural experience: the Reinhartshausen Collection Museum exhibits art treasures of the Prussian Princess Marianne, and the castle hotel with park invites you to stay overnight. Offers such as wine tastings, cellar tours and the annual Rheingau Music Festival emphasise the connection between wine, history and art.
Reputation & awards
The wines are regularly awarded top ratings.
Conclusion
Schloss Reinhartshausen stands for over 680 years of winegrowing history, outstanding terroir wines and a lively combination of tradition, sustainability and hospitality. A must for lovers of German premium wines! 🍇🏰
