The 50th parallel runs directly through this favoured single vineyard, situated above the course of the Rhine. With a southern exposure and a slope inclination of up to 45%, Johannisberg rises from 114 metres to 182 metres above sea level. With an annual average of around 1700 hours of sunshine, Schloss Johannisberg has the highest energy supply in the Rheingau. The soil formation of pure Taunus quartzite, with layers of medium to deep loess loam, stores heat and water to a particularly high degree. The vineyard was mentioned in old records as early as 1143 as "monte sancti Johannis", after the Benedictine abbey on the hill was consecrated in honour of John the Baptist. As early as 1870, the wines were sold in England with the label "first growth".
