Robert Weil - Kiedricher Klosterberg Riesling VDP.ERSTE LAGE dry 2024:
🏠 Weingut Robert Weil: A legend of German Riesling
The Robert Weil winery in Kiedrich in the Rheingau is one of Germany's great traditional wineries. It was founded in 1875 by Dr Robert Weil, who had already acquired the first vineyards on the Kiedricher Berg in 1867. Today, the estate is run by the fourth generation, Wilhelm Weil. The vineyards cover around 90 hectares, which are planted exclusively with the Riesling grape variety - a clear concentration on the royal wine variety of the Rheingau. The winery has been a member of the Association of German Prädikat Wine Estates (VDP) since 1907 and today belongs to the Japanese beverage group Suntory, which has invested in modernising the cellar technology and expanding the vineyards.
The estate's international reputation is legendary: as early as the 19th century, the imperial and royal houses of Europe were among its customers, and its Rieslings are still regarded as symbols of German wine culture worldwide.
🌍 The location: Kiedricher Klosterberg - a "mountain location" with history
Alongside the famous Gräfenberg and the Turmberg, the Kiedricher Klosterberg is the third of Kiedrich's great "mountain sites". Its name is derived from the old Klosterweg, a connecting road between the Eberbach monastery and Kiedrich, which once crossed the site.
The vineyard covers 66 hectares and faces south-west, which guarantees optimal sunlight. The site is characterised by its steep slopes with gradients of up to 60% at altitudes of up to 240 metres above sea level. The special microclimate is determined by the winds from the Taunus, which ensure good ventilation and protect the grapes from excessive moisture.
The geological diversity is the real heart of the Klosterberg: the medium to deep, stony-gritty soils consist of Devonian rock (coloured slate) and pre-Devonian rocks such as phyllites and sericite gneiss, interspersed with gravelly loess. This unique soil mixture gives the wines their characteristic minerality and complexity.
Wilhelm Weil emphasises that the altitude and coolness of this site are what make it so appealing today, in the age of global warming - it was his generation that allowed the Klosterberg to grow into the quality of a Erste Lage. Of the three Kiedrich vineyards, the Klosterberg is considered the most accessible and charming, while the Turmberg is described as purist and the Gräfenberg as sublime.
🍇 Vintage 2024: Cool elegance and brilliant clarity
The 2024 vintage in the Rheingau was characterised by a significantly cooler growing season with alternating rainy and dry phases. After an extremely dry and very sunny summer, rainfall in autumn brought additional moisture - but the grapes remained largely very healthy. The early budbreak in April was followed by heavy late frosts, which hit the Ahr, Nahe, Saar and Ruwer in particular, but the Rheingau was largely spared.
Compared to the outstanding 2023, the 2024 is even finer, cooler and more compelling with the same crystalline brilliance. The wines of the vintage are characterised by a cool brilliance, fine acidity and a classic elegance that make them a feast for lovers of the original Rhine Riesling.
🔬 Vinification: Gentle hand-picking and natural ageing
The grapes for the Klosterberg are harvested by hand accordingto strict quality criteria. The maceration time is a short six to 24 hours. Fermentation takes place mainly spontaneously in double barrels(large wooden barrels) with natural yeasts. The wine remains on the lees until the summer, which gives it additional complexity.
The winery works completely organically; certification is imminent. The use of sulphur is reduced to a minimum and the wine is labelled as vegan.

👃 Tasting notes: Fruit, spice and fine minerality
Appearance: Light, clear straw yellow with green reflections.
Nose: Fruit and flavour go harmoniously hand in hand. Orange zest, mango, yellow peach, subtle pepper and fresh bay leaf characterise the complex bouquet. These notes are complemented by flavours of white peach, pear, fresh citrus fruit, lime blossom and wet slate. A fine ginger spice rounds off the aroma.
Palate: The wine shows an impressive balance between structured acidity, juicy fruit and a fine spiciness. The lively acidity provides freshness and tension, while the fruit is dominated by stone fruit and lemon zest. There is also a subtle salinity and a striking mineral note that comes from the slate soil. Compared to the tighter Turmberg, the Klosterberg is the denser, more powerful and smoother wine - it is creamier and focusses more on stone fruit than citrus.
Finish: Long-lasting, elegant and dry.
🍽️ Food recommendations
Due to its lively acidity and mineral structure, the Klosterberg is an excellent accompaniment:
Fish and seafood: oysters, sushi/sashimi, steamed salmon with lemon butter
Poultry and white meat dishes: grilled poultry, goat's cheese
Asian cuisine: Slightly spicy dishes, Asian vegetable stir-fry with ginger
Light summer dishes: Light summer salad with goat's cheese
Serving temperature: optimal at 8 °C
🏆 Reviews and awards
Tastingbook.com: 92 points
In the winery's overall portfolio, the Klosterberg ranks as a VDP.Erste Lage clearly above the Gutsriesling, but below the Grossen Gewächsen of the Gräfenberg. The 2024 vintage is described as a "more harmonious and finer vintage than the cooler 2021", with a "more classic and leaner profile than the full-throttle 2023s".
