Pavillon Blanc du Château Margaux 2005

Introduction

The Pavillon Blanc du Château Margaux is the white Bordeaux wine from the famous Bordeaux First Growth Château Margaux. Whilst its red counterpart, the Pavillon Rouge, is regarded as the second wine of the red Grand Vin, the Pavillon Blanc is a white wine in its own right, produced from the estate’s white grape varieties. The 2005 vintage is considered one of the outstanding vintages of the early 21st century, and the 2005 Pavillon Blanc is regarded as one of the finest white Bordeaux wines of this era.

The estate: Château Margaux

Château Margaux is one of the five famous First Growths (Premiers Crus) of Bordeaux, classified in 1855. The estate’s history stretches back almost 1,000 years – in the 12th century, the estate was known as ‘La Mothe de Margaux’ and was reserved for the royal family.

The current viticultural structure dates back to Pierre de Lestonnac, who converted the land from cereal cultivation to wine production between 1572 and 1582. The vineyards of Château Margaux now cover 80 hectares – virtually unchanged since the year 1700.

The winemaker Berlonplayed a particularly significant role in the history of white wine at Château Margaux in the 17th century: he was the first winemaker in Bordeaux to vinify red and white grape varieties separately, as they were planted together in the same plots at that time.

The 2005 vintage

The 2005 vintage in Bordeaux was characterised by exceptional weather conditions:

  • Cold winter: The winter was colder than average, which delayed budbreak by about a week.

  • Hot, sunny spring: This led to uniform growth of the vines and rapid flowering in early June.

  • Dry summer: Between 1 May and the start of the harvest , barely 100 mm of rainfall was recorded – a level unprecedented for the region up to that point. Fortunately, however, temperatures remained extremely high.

  • Harvest: The harvest began on 20 September 2005.

The drought posed a major challenge, but the great terroirs of Château Margaux demonstrated their exceptional ability to compensate for climatic extremes – with the very moderation and balance that also characterise the estate’s wines. The yield was lower than in the 2004 vintage, with significantly fewer grapes per vine.

Blend and ageing

The Pavillon Blanc du Château Margaux is madefrom 100% Sauvignon Blanc. This sets it apart from many other white Bordeaux wines, which are often blended with Sémillon.

Ageing:

  • The wine is aged for around eight months.

  • Around 20 per cent of the ageing takes place in new French oak barrels.

  • Part of the ageing also takes placein 350-litre casks.

  • Alcohol content: 12.5%

Some tasters also report notesof ‘glue, hay and yeast’ – characteristics that can be typical of a complex, mature Sauvignon Blanc.
