Moët & Chandon Cuvée Dom Pérignon 2009
Vintage characteristics and special features
Dom Pérignon 2009 is one of the house's special vintages, as it was the first time in Dom Pérignon's history that it was not released chronologically. The warmer and more mature 2009 vintage was released before the more classic, cooler 2008 vintage.
The 2009 wine year in Champagne began with a harsh winter and a mild, rainy spring. Storms in July created challenges in the vineyard, but a perfect August with uninterrupted hot and dry weather allowed the grapes to ripen ideally. According to reports, the conscious decision by cellar master Richard Geoffroy to postpone the harvest was decisive for the high quality. They waited for the redemptive September rains to preserve the natural acidity of the grapes and thus create the perfect balance of fullness and structure .
The Dom Pérignon 2009 cuvée is a traditional blend of the two noblest grape varieties in Champagne: Chardonnay and Pinot Noir.
Tasting notes (aroma & flavour)
On the nose, Dom Pérignon 2009 is complex and inviting:
Primary aromas: ripe white and yellow fruit flavours of apple, white peach, nectarine, guava and exotic fruits such as mango dominate .
Citrus & spicy notes: There are also aromas of grapefruit zest, mandarin orange and a hint of liquorice.
Autolysis & toasty notes:The long ageing in the cellar gives the champagne classic notes of brioche, vanilla, almond, marzipan, coffee and a hint of cocoa .
On the palate, the 2009 is full-bodied and fleshy with an impressively fine and silky texture. Despite its richness and opulence, which the warm vintage brings with it, the wine has an invigorating freshness and a fine-meshed acidity structure. The finish is long, characterised by a pleasant salinity and leaves a lasting mineral impression . Richard Geoffroy himself described the texture as not creamy, but silky.
Critics' reviews (selection)
Dom Pérignon 2009 has received outstanding reviews from leading wine publications, emphasising its quality and special character.
Drinking maturity and ageing potential
The 2009 Dom Pérignon was stored in the cellar for around eight years before its release. It is already unusually open and accessible in its youth, which distinguishes it from other, more austere vintages. Despite its early drinking maturity, the wine has enough concentration and tension to mature for many years. Experts recommend a drinking window from now until at least 2040, and some ratings even go as far as 2049 .
