The Domaine Maufort Père et Fils is one of Burgundy’s most traditional, yet least well-documented, estates. The estate was particularly active in the first half of the 20th century, producing wines from renowned vineyards in the Côte de Nuits. In addition to Gevrey-Chambertin, the portfolio also included wines from Pommard and the prestigious Clos de la Roche Grand Cru . Particularly well-known is the ‘Collection du Docteur Barolet’, a range that apparently originated from one of the great Burgundy merchants of the time .
The 1964 Gevrey-Chambertin from this house is now an absolute rarity. The Gevrey-Chambertin appellation is home to the most powerful and structured red wines of the Côte de Nuits . The soils, with their high proportion of limestone and clay, lend the Pinot Noir wines of this commune a particular firmness, density and considerable ageing potential. A mature Gevrey-Chambertin is typically characterised by complex aromas of dark berries, which blend with spicy, leathery and earthy notes of undergrowth and truffle.
Domaine Maufort Père et Fils produced its wines at a time when the Burgundian wine world was still characterised by small, family-run estates and a highly artisanal approach to winemaking. This is also evident from the existence of a 1934 vintage from Maufort – a testament to the long history of this estate. A wine from 1964 has long since passed its youth and is now in a phase of perfect maturity, in which the fruity primary aromas have merged with the complex tertiary notes. The wines of the “Collection du Docteur Barolet” were regarded as having been selected with particular care and were often stored for decades in the merchants’ cellars.
Today, this Gevrey-Chambertin is, above all, a piece of contemporary history.
