1. Wine and origin

Mas de Daumas Gassac Blanc 2025is a white wine from the Guibert family, who founded the estate in the early 1970s. The estate is considered one of the icons of the Languedoc and is often referred to as the "Grand Cru of the Midi". The white wine cuvée was first produced in 1986. As the Guiberts also consciously plant international grape varieties, the wine may only be marketed as Vin de Pays de l'Hérault (today mostly IGP Saint-Guilhem-le-Désert).

2. Terroir and cultivation

The vines grow in the cool, wooded high valley of Gassac (Haute Vallée du Gassac), which offers a rare microclimate. The roots penetrate a glacial red gravel soil with a high limestone content, reminiscent of the great vineyards of Burgundy. The plots are located at an altitude of up to 700 metres and the low yields are sometimes lower than those of Burgundy Grand Crus. The vineyard comprises 70 individual plots surrounded by 4,000 hectares of forest.

3. Grape varieties

The 2025 Blanc is a blend of around 20 white varieties, the proportions of which vary slightly depending on the vintage. The current source shows the following distribution for the current vintage:

  • 35% Viognier: clone material from the famous Condrieu vineyard Georges Vernay.

  • 24 % Chardonnay: Vines descended from the Comtes Lafon in Burgundy.

  • 15 % Petit Manseng: Vines from the Béarn (Charles Hours).

  • 10 % Chenin Blanc: clone material from the Loire (Domaine Huet - Vouvray).

  • 6 % Muscat and a smaller proportion of other varieties (e.g. Marsanne, Roussanne, Sauvignon Blanc, Fiano, Semillon).

The proportions (e.g. 35 % Viognier, 29 % Chardonnay, 13 % Petit Manseng, 10 % Chenin Blanc, 6 % Muscat and 7 % other varieties) are already very similar in earlier vintages.

4. Vinification

The wine is matured exclusively in stainless steel tanks; no barriques are used. It is vinified with a short maceration period (5-7 days) and spontaneous fermentation with wild, indigenous yeasts. After fermentation, the wine rests on the fine lees for around four months before bottling - a process designed to preserve the freshness, varietal fruit and mineral structure. 5. Tasting note (synopsis)

Colour: Light golden yellow with beautiful, bright reflections.

Nose: Intense aromas of white-fleshed fruit such as peach and pear, accompanied by citrus notes (lemon, bergamot) and ripe tropical fruit. There are also floral accents of white flowers, subtle honey nuances and a fine almond spice. The overall impression is extremely complex and aromatic.

Palate: The attack is fluid and supple, with a creamy, almost waxy texture. The mouthfeel is full, expansive and multi-layered, but always remains finely woven. The balance between fresh acidity, fruit fullness and a mineral, slightly salty note is excellent.

Finish: The finish is long, elegant and leaves a pure, fine impression.

6. Drinking maturity and ageing potential

The 2025 Mas de Daumas Gassac Blanc reveals its full aromatic splendour when young and is a delight for anyone who appreciates the vibrant fruit and freshness of a complex white wine. At the same time, it has considerable ageing potential of at least 12 years; with good ageing, it can develop notes of honey, dried fruit and a gentle oxidative complexity without losing its freshness.

The Sunday TimesWine Clubwine expert, for example, recommends ageing it for 4 to 12 years to experience the added depth and honeyed, candied fruit flavours. The ideal serving temperature is around 9-12 °C.

7. Food pairing

Thanks to its fine acidity, mineral core and smooth texture, this wine is an excellent accompaniment to food. It harmonises particularly well with grilled or fried fish (e.g. sea bass, sole), seafood, white meat such as Bresse chicken or veal and Mediterranean vegetable dishes.

A particularly rare packaging is the original wooden box with 6 bottles, of which only very few copies were allocated.

As this is a very young wine, there are currently no detailed reviews from major wine publications. However, the Mövenpick wine house has given the cuvée an excellent rating of 19/20 points. Based on the high ratings of previous vintages and the consistent quality of the house, it can be assumed that the 2025 will also achieve top marks again.

The Mas de Daumas Gassac Blanc 2025is an exceptional, complex white wine from one of the best terroirs in the south of France. With its unique cuvée of classic and exclusive grape varieties, it combines the juicy richness and naturalness of the south with the cool elegance and minerality of great terroir wines. An impressive pleasure even when young, the wine also has the potential for long and rewarding ageing.

Goes well with: Fried fish, white meat or Mediterranean vegetable dishes. Serve well chilled at 9-12 °C to experience its full range of flavours.
