Markgraf von Baden - Riesling sparkling wine Extra brut 'Traditional bottle fermentation'
Markgraf von Baden Riesling Sekt Extra brutis a single-varietal sparkling wine from the traditional Baden wine-growing region and is produced using the traditional bottle fermentation method. Its very dry flavour (Extra brut) and the exclusive use of the Riesling grape variety give it a clear, elegant profile that combines freshness, fruit and a fine minerality.
🏰 Origin & winery
The VDP.Weingut Markgraf von Badenis a renowned winery with over 900 years of family tradition and has been a major influence on Baden viticulture for centuries.
Growing area & location: The Riesling grapes for this sparkling wine come from steep slopes in the Ortenau region, which are rooted in the characteristic granite soils. These soils significantly characterise the minerality of the wine.
Climate: The vineyards benefit from a pronounced temperature gradient: during the day, the high temperatures of the Rhine Valley ensure optimum ripeness, while at night cool downdraughts from the foothills of the Black Forest preserve the freshness and flavour of the grapes.
VDP membership: The winery is a member of the Association of German Prädikat Wine Estates (VDP) and produces its own VDP sparkling wine. This sparkling wine is therefore a classic producer sparkling wine ("Winzersekt") in premium quality.
🍾 The sparkling wine in detail
🔍 Appearance
The sparkling wine presents itself in the glass in a brilliant light yellow colour with lively green reflections. The effervescence is fine, delicate and very long-lasting, indicating high-quality bottle fermentation.
👃 Nose (odour)
The bouquet is characterised by a fresh, varietal Riesling fruitiness with yellow-fruity aromas:
Primary aromas: citrus fruit (lemon), peach, green apple, nectarine, pear, quince.
Secondary/tertiary flavours: A subtle yeasty note of brioche, meadow herbs.
👅 Palate (flavour)
The Riesling sparkling wine is powerful, fresh and livelyon the palate :
Texture & acidity: The concise fruit acidity (approx. 7.1-7.5 g/l) gives it a noticeable but well-integrated liveliness and freshness.
Perlage: The fine, very soft perlage (bubbles) ensures a delicate and polished mouthfeel.
Finish: The finish is wonderfully long and elegant with mineral notes (stone/granite). The winery manager Volker Faust also emphasises the creaminess created by the yeast ageing , which harmonises perfectly with the minerality of the Riesling.
