Louis Roederer Cristal brut 1983 MAGNUM 1500ml
Louis Roederer Cristal is the iconic prestige cuvée of the Louis Roederer champagne house, which was founded in 1776. Cristal was created in 1876 at the request of Tsar Alexander II, who wanted a champagne in a transparent bottle for his court. The cuvée is only produced in exceptional vintages. The 1983 Cristal Brut was produced in a vintage that did not reach the level of the legendary 1982 and 1988 vintages, but is nevertheless considered to be very successful. Today it is a rare and sought-after rarity.
Grape varieties and ageing
The 1983 Cristal is a blend of around 55-60% Pinot Noir and 40-45% Chardonnay. The grapes come exclusively from Grand Cru vineyards. The wine matured for six years on the lees in the cellars of the house and rested for a further eight months after disgorgement . The alcohol content is 12%.
1983 vintage in Champagne
The 1983 vintage was good overall, although not outstanding. The spring was cool and delayed flowering. Summer, on the other hand, was warm and sunny. Rainy weather saved the grapes from drying out and led to a rich, abundant harvest ("heavy crop"). Cellar master Jean-Baptiste Lécaillon described the harvest as "challenging" due to the large quantity of vines. Some batches underwent slight oxidation, which gave the wine a special richness.
Tasting note
The 1983 Cristal can display an interesting range of mature flavours. The typical perceptions include:
Colours: Ripe, straw-yellow hues that can fade into golden green. In general, the colour is bright and the mousse is still beautiful.
Nose: Complex with mineral notes (flint) and balsamic aromas (cedar, cypress), plus toast, brioche and fresh nuts (almonds) . In more advanced examples, notes of ripe white fruit, citrus and mushrooms may also appear.
Palate: The bouquet opens up to a surprising freshness with great elegance. It is dry with a taut but well-integrated acidity. The wine is mostly full-bodied, has a silky texture and a long, persistent finish.
Overall impression: At a tasting in 2018 (a bottling from the cellar reserve), it was still incredibly aromatic with a remarkable freshness for its age.
Critics' ratings
The 1983 Cristal has consistently achieved very good to excellent ratings over the years, reflecting its enduring class:
These consistently high scores confirm that the Cristal 1983 is considered the top wine of its vintage.
Development and drinking maturity
The 1983 Cristal is a complex wine whose drinking maturity has developed over the decades. The information varies:
Initially: it was described as fresh, full-bodied and aromatic with a crisp acidity.
Current state: The best drinking phase has been reached. It has lost its fresh fruitiness, but can still be enjoyable.
Current market prices
The 1983 Cristal is a sought-after collector's item due to its age and rarity. Prices vary greatly depending on the bottle format, condition and place of sale. A magnum bottle (1.5 litres) was offered for around USD 550 in the mid-2020s. A normal 0.75-litre bottle can fetch several hundred euros at auction or even more. The rosé version of the same vintage has fetched prices of up to 600-700 euros for three bottles at auction. The high collector's value can be explained by the limited edition and the growing rarity of original bottlings from the 1980s.
Food recommendations
Due to its complexity and persistent acidity, the 1983 Cristal goes well with
Poultry: Tender meat such as poulard ballotines with chanterelles, fine dishes with white meat or veal fillet.
Seafood: Fried prawns or lobster, scallops.
Mature cheese: A mildly spicy Comté or a creamy Brie go well with its mature flavours.
Exquisite starters: As an aperitif with fine canapés, gourgeres or scallop tartare.
The best drinking temperature is 10 °C.
Conclusion
The Louis Roederer Cristal Brut 1983 is a witness to the history of champagne, combining the class of the house and the specialities of a somewhat atypical vintage. It displays successful maturity, astonishing freshness and a complex bouquet. As a limited and rare rarity, it is a coveted collector's item with a price that reflects its exclusivity. For immediate enjoyment, it is important to ensure that the bottle is stored properly.
- Wine Spectator: 90/100 (12-1988) Rich and concentrated, packed with intense pear, toast, lemon and spice flavours that are well integrated and focused on the palate. The flavours are beautiful, but it could stand a little finesse.
