2. Origin and distinctive features

The ‘Feuervogel’ is a world-class Sylvaner from the renowned Keller winery in Flörsheim-Dalsheim (Rheinhessen). The winery is run by Klaus Peter Keller and enjoys international acclaim – critics such as Robert M. Parker Jr., Jancis Robinson and Falstaff regard Keller as a benchmark for terroir-driven white wines.

The Sylvaner vines used for this wine are over 70 years old – a rarity that lends the wine its exceptional depth and concentration. The name ‘Feuervogel’ (Firebird) alludes to the mythical bird that symbolises renewal and light – a fitting name for a wine that showcases the Sylvaner grape variety in a new, radiant dimension.

3. Wine description

Nose

The nose reveals delicate herbal and floral notes. Green apples, quince and a citrus freshness dominate , accompanied by subtle herbal notes and a hint of flint. International critics also describe aromas of passion fruit, wet stones, smoke and wild herbs. A slight note of smoke and oak is also discernible.

Palate

On the palate, the wine is dry, with a vibrant minerality and lively juiciness. The texture is slender and taut, yet at the same time possesses tremendous intensity and grip. The crisp acidity lends the wine tension and freshness. Exotic fruit aromas such as papaya, mango and passion fruit, as well as a slightly bitter grapefruit note on the finish, add complexity and prevent the wine from veering into the overly fruity.

Finish

The finish is long and clean, with a subtle hint of bitterness that lends the wine additional depth. With a little aeration, the wine develops a herbaceous, mineral note.

4. Reviews

The 2021 ‘Feuervogel’ has received excellent reviews from critics and the wine community:

SourceRating
James Suckling94 points – “A very expressive nose of passion fruit, wet stones, smoke and wild herbs. Concentrated, juicy and racy, with impressive drive and focus.”
CellarTracker90 points (community average)
Vivino4.2 (based on 75 user reviews)

The community particularly praises the wine’s“fresh cellar acidity” and “Burgundian” character. One user describes it as “one of Germany’s most refined and enormously complex Silvaners”.

5. Drinking window and ageing potential

Despite the warm climate, the 2021 vintage offers a cool balance. The recommended drinking window is approximately 2024 to 2030. The wine is still young at present, but as it matures, it will develop further complexity without losing any of its freshness.

6. Food pairings

This wine pairs superbly with:

  • Grilled seafood

  • Asparagus dishes with a light sauce

  • Trout with lemon butter

  • Tender veal dishes

The wine’s mineral freshness and subtle spice really come into their own with these dishes.

7. Conclusion

The Keller Winery Sylvaner ‘Feuervogel’ dry 2021 is an exceptional white wine that demonstrates the potential of the Sylvaner grape variety at a world-class level. With its impressive complexity, lively acidity and precise minerality, it is a benchmark wine for terroir-driven Sylvaner from Rheinhessen. Despite its hefty price tag (€52–86), it offers an unrivalled tasting experience and considerable ageing potential. For lovers of concentrated, mineral-driven white wines, the ‘Feuervogel’ is a clear recommendation.
