2. Origin and distinctive features

The ‘Grüner Silvaner dry’ is the entry-level Silvaner from the renowned Keller winery in Flörsheim-Dalsheim (Rheinhessen). The winery is run by Klaus Peter Keller and is internationally regarded as a benchmark for terroir-driven white wines.

In contrast to the significantly more expensive ‘Feuervogel’ (whose vines are over 70 years old), the ‘Grüner Silvaner’ is the estate wine of the winery – an accessible yet expertly crafted Silvaner of the highest , which demonstrates the Keller estate’s great expertise even in the ‘entry-level’ range.

The 2021 vintage was a special one for Keller: due to a wet early summer with a risk of fungal disease and a late flowering period, yields were low. Klaus Peter Keller himself described 2021 as a vintage that produced “concentrated and ripe dry wines” – an “opportunity to experience a vintage in which the vines had to struggle to reach ripeness”.

3. Wine description

Appearance

The wine presents itself in a radiant straw-yellow hue with bright, crystalline highlights.

Nose

On the nose, there are attractive aromas of yellow apple and green beans. These are accompanied by white peach, green apple and a delicate hint of elderflower, underpinned by a mineral flint note. Citrus notes and subtle herbal accents round off the bouquet.

Palate

On the palate, the wine is dry, fresh and juicy, with a lively, precise acidity. The texture is medium-bodied and supple, with a fine, chalky minerality. The fruit aromas of yellow apple, green pear and citrus are complemented by a subtle herbal spice. Some tasters also highlight fine tannins and a balanced, elegant structure.

Finish

The finish is long and lingering with a smooth, delicate texture. The saline minerality and a refreshing dryness linger on the palate for a long time.

Another reviewer draws a comparison with an Aligoté from d’Auvenay – albeit at a much more affordable price.

5. Drinking window and ageing potential

The recommended drinking window is approximately 2022 to 2028. The wine is already excellent to drink now , whilst still retaining its youthful freshness, but also has potential for short to medium-term bottle ageing.

6. Food pairings

The wine pairs superbly with:

  • seafood and fish dishes (particularly hake/cod)

  • Asian dishes with mild seasoning

  • Root vegetables and pumpkin dishes

  • Smoked mackerel with beetroot and radishes

  • Poultry and light veal dishes

The wine’s mineral freshness and lively acidity make it a versatile accompaniment to food.

7. Conclusion

The Keller Grüner Silvaner Dry 2021 is an excellent introduction to the world of Keller Silvaners – a wine that impressively demonstrates the estate’s craftsmanship even in the accessible price range. With its fresh fruit, precise minerality and lively acidity, it is a versatile, easy-drinking white wine that works equally well as an everyday companion or paired with more sophisticated dishes.

For lovers of concentrated, mineral-driven white wines, the ‘Grüner Silvaner’ comes highly recommended – and for anyone wishing to discover the famous ‘Feuervogel’ without having to dig deep into their pockets, it is the ideal starting point.
