Introduction

The 1960 Oestricher Mühlberg Riesling from Gutsverwaltung Geheimrat J. Wegeler is a rare example of the Rheingau Riesling tradition from the mid-20th century. It comes from the winery now known as Weingüter Geheimrat J. Wegeler and is one of the most renowned estates in the Rheingau. The 1960 vintage – now more than six decades old – is a wine for connoisseurs and collectors, the enjoyment of which is a rare experience today.

The winery: Geheimrat J. Wegeler Estate

The history of the Wegeler estate is closely linked to the history of Riesling. The winery was founded in 1882 by Julius Wegeler. Prior to this, he had worked as a wine merchant and sparkling wine producer at the famous Deinhard company, whose daughter Emma he married in 1861.

The winery remains family-runto this day – now in its fourth generation. It comprises two estates: one in the Rheingau (Oestrich-Winkel) and one on the Moselle (Bernkastel-Kues). The vineyard area now covers around 60 hectares.

The estate management company ‘Geheimrat J. Wegeler Erben ’ – to use its historical name – was the bottler of the wine discussed here. The name ‘Geheimrat J.’ dates back to the founder,Julius Wegeler, who held the title of ‘Geheimer Kommerzienrat’. Today , ‘Geheimrat J.’ is the estate’smost famous Riesling cuvée, blended from up to 15 different ‘Erste Gewächse’ vineyards around Oestrich.

The estate is a member ofthe VDP (Association of German Prädikat Wine Estates) and owns vineyards of world renown.

The vineyard: Oestricher Mühlberg

The Oestricher Mühlberg is a vineyard in the Rheingau, which belongs to the municipality of Oestrich-Winkel . There is very little information available regarding the exact size and classification of the vineyard for the 1960 vintage. The wine is listedon auction platforms as a ‘VDP’ wine, suggesting that the grapes come from a VDP-classified vineyard – possibly a ‘Große Lage’ or an ‘Erste Lage’.
