Hohe Domkirche – Scharzhofberger Riesling dry 1978: A legend at its peak of maturity

The Scharzhofberger Riesling Dry 1978 from the Hohe Domkirche in Trier is far more than just a wine – it is a legend from one of the world’s greatest vineyard sites, captured in a bottle almost half a century after the harvest. The Hohe Domkirche has been known as an independent winery since 1851 ; however, its roots in viticulture date back to the 13th century, when the properties of Trier Cathedral were first documented . It is one of the three partners in the Bischöfliche Weingüter Trier (Trier Episcopal Wineries), which have been joining forces since 1966 and today cultivate around 130 hectares of vineyards in prime sites , of which approximately 6.3 hectares are on the Scharzhofberg .

The Scharzhofberg itself is not just any vineyard site – it is regarded as arguably the most legendary vineyard site in the Saar and ranks among the world’s most famous Riesling terroirs . Its south-facing slope, over 300 metres high and with a gradient of up to 55 per cent, consists of deep, loess-rich Devonian slate with a rock content of up to 70 per cent . This rock stores the heat of the day and releases it to the vines during the cool Saar nights , which gives the wines their characteristic salty minerality, refined elegance and impressive longevity .

The 1978 vintage is now an absolute rarity. The wines of the Scharzhofberg are renowned for retaining an astonishing vitality and a rich spectrum of fruit even when very mature . A dry Riesling from the Hohe Domkirche, almost fifty years old, has long since left its youth behind and is now in a phase of perfect maturity, characterised by the distinctive tertiary aromas of this unique terroir – smoky, spicy notes of slate, combined with a lively, yet harmoniously integrated acid structure . For lovers of great German Rieslings, this wine offers a rare opportunity to experience a piece of authentic Saar history and to savour the exceptional quality of a house that, like almost no other, epitomises the tradition and excellence of German viticulture.
