Hessische Staatsweingüter Kloster Eberbach - Assmanshäuser Höllenberg Pinot Noir dry 2010
The 2010 Pinot Noir dry from the Assmanshäuser Höllenberg vineyard is one of the most ambitious red wines from the Hessian State Winery Kloster Eberbach. The Höllenberg site in Assmannshausen in the Rheingau is considered one of the most famous Pinot Noir sites in Germany, characterised by steep, south-west facing slate and greywacke weathered soils, which give the wine a unique minerality and spiciness.
The year 2010 in the Rheingau was characterised by a cool, changeable spring, a warm summer in July and a rainy, sunny September. These conditions led to late-ripening grapes with smaller berries, a pronounced acid structure and concentrated flavours.
In the glass, the wine is a dense, still slightly youthful ruby red colour with a slight garnet rim. The nose is complex and fine: cherry, wild berry, cranberry and elderberry, underlaid with cool herbs, violets, a fine smoky note, wet slate and a hint of leather. On the palate, it presents itself with taut, lively acidity, fine-grained, already well-integrated tannins and dense, yet elegant fruit. The minerality of the Höllenberg is clearly evident. Seven years of ageing in the bottle have produced the first tertiary aromas of forest floor, mushroom and dried cherry, without detracting from the freshness.
The finish is long, slightly cool and spicy, with a hint of bitter almond and slate dust. The 2010 is currently at the peak of its drinking window, but still has potential for another five to seven years due to its structure. It is an excellent accompaniment to game dishes, duck, mushroom risotto or mature hard cheese.
All in all, a classic Pinot Noir of great finesse, characterised by its terroir, which exemplifies the strengths of the cool 2010 vintage - freshness, elegance and longevity.
