📜 Wine report: Dönnhoff, Hermannshöhle GG 2005

🏠 The Hermann Dönnhoff Winery

The Hermann Dönnhoff winery in Oberhausen on the Nahe has been one of the absolute top German winemakers for decades. International critics regularly celebrate the estate's wines with top ratings. The philosophy is to create wines of "noble elegance, an incredibly concentrated, rich flavour and deep minerality". The 2005 Grosses Gewächs (GG) is a perfect example of this style.

🌄 The site: Niederhäuser Hermannshöhle (VDP.GROSSE LAGE®)

Hermannshöhle is the estate's most prestigious site and is known as the "Grand Cru of the Nahe":

  • Soil: The weathered soils of black-grey slate are mixed with porphyry, limestone and volcanic rock. This terroir gives the wine its characteristic, deep minerality and enormous ageing potential.

  • Location: A south-facing steep slope with an inclination of up to 70%, at an altitude of 130 to 175 metres, offers optimal sunlight.

☀️ The 2005 vintage

The 2005 vintage was warm and dry, with a very sunny late summer and a "golden" October. Compared to the extremely hot 2003, however, it still produced wines with a vital, elegant acidity. Helmut Dönnhoff described his 2005s as "perfectly balanced" - they combine the fullness of a warm vintage with the freshness and minerality that characterise the Hermannshöhle.

🍷 Winemaking and style

The grapes for this dry GG were harvested from old vines. The wine fermented and matured traditionally in a mixture of stainless steel tanks and neutral, large 1,200-litre wooden barrels (barrels) made from local oak. This gentle treatment emphasises the fruit and terroir without overpowering them with oak flavours.

👃 Tasting note: A masterpiece of maturity

Based on tastings from 2021 to 2025, the following picture emerges:

  • Colour: A vibrant, almost fluorescent buttercup yellow with a hint of green.

  • Nose: Intense and complex. Ripe, exotic fruit flavours such as mango, pineapple and peach mingle with notes of crème brûlée, some smoke, fine spice and a deep, stony minerality.

  • Palate: Despite its age of 20 years, the wine impresses with its wonderful energy and vibrancy. It is medium to full-bodied, deep and concentrated. The ripe fruit is supported by a zesty, slightly bitter grapefruit note, a fine phenolic flavour and a taut, salty minerality. A later taster aptly described it as "like distilled rock from Hermann's Cave".

  • Finish: Very long, dry and with impressive mineral clarity.

🏆 Reviews and ratings

This wine has consistently received top ratings over the course of its development. In a recent tasting from 2025 , Xavier Auerbach (CellarTracker) awarded 93 points and praised the wine as a "wonderfully lively palate". A horizontal tasting in 2011 awarded the wine93 points. In retrospect, the wine is often seen in the 94-96 point range due to its exceptional balance and longevity , emphasising its iconic status.

⏳ Drinking maturity and ageing potential

According to current tasting notes, the 2005 GG was at or just beyond the peak of its maturity in 2025. It is now ready to enjoy, but still shows remarkable freshness and depth. With optimal storage, it could hold this peak for a few more years. For bottles from the best sites, even longer is possible.

💰 Price and availability

Due to its age and status, the wine is only available on the auction or secondary market:

  • The average price was recently around USD 151 (excl. tax) per bottle.

  • At one auction, two bottles were offeredfor €110 each.

  • At a US retailer, the current bid for a bottle was USD 230.

🍽️ Serving and food pairing recommendations

  • Serving temperature: 10-12 °C. Open the wine well before drinking, preferably decant or pour into a carafe for several hours.

  • Food pairing: The complexity and minerality of the wine harmonise perfectly with sophisticated dishes: roasted pike-perch with porcini risotto, veal fillet with morel sauce or mature, creamy hard cheese such as Comté or Gruyère.

To summarise, the Dönnhoff Niederhäuser Hermannshöhle Riesling Grosses Gewächs trocken 2005is an exceptional wine that perfectly demonstrates the potential of great German Rieslings. Today it is a profound, complex and at the same time lively pleasure experience and a real collector's item.
