Product information
Domaine Henri de Villamont is a historic winery based in Savigny-lès-Beaune, whose history dates back to the late 19th century. The distinctive and architecturally remarkable cellar buildings were constructed by Léonce Bocquet, a passionate winemaker who, at that time, was also the owner of the famous Château du Clos de Vougeot . Since 1964, the estate has been owned by the Swiss Schenk family, who initially focused strongly on volume production before undertaking a fundamental overhaul from 2004 onwards. That year, the family initiated a profound transformation: production was drastically reduced from over 20 million bottles to around 350,000 bottles, in order to recommit fully to quality and the great wines of Burgundy .
The 1955 Pommard from this estate is thus a testament to a different era – a time when the estate was still producing on a large scale. The Pommard appellation is renowned for its powerful, well-structured and tannic red wines made from the Pinot Noir grape variety . The soils, with their high iron content, lend the wines a particular firmness and considerable ageing potential . Typical of a Pommard are aromas of red and black fruits, which, as the wine ages, are often accompanied by spicy, leathery and musky notes .
At Domaine Henri de Villamont, vinification is carried out traditionally with a maceration period of around 18 days in stainless-steel tanks, followed by 14 months’ ageing in oak barrels, some of which are new . This method lends the wine structure and complexity.
A Pommard from the legendary 1955 vintage is an absolute rarity today. Such a wine has long since left its youth behind and is now in a phase of perfect maturity, in which the fruity aromas have blended with the complex, tertiary notes of leather, undergrowth and spices. For collectors and connoisseurs of great Burgundies, this is a coveted piece of contemporary history. Tasting this wine promises the intense, earthy and powerful experience that characterises the great Pommards – set against the backdrop of an eventful estate history marked by a return to the roots of quality.
