The House of G.H. Martel & Cie: A Family History

The house’s roots date back to 1869, when Gustav Heinrich Martel, a winegrower from Avenay-Val-d’Or, founded the house of the same name. In the early 1920s, the house passed into the ownership of the Tabourin family .

The man after whom the cuvée is named, Henry-Léopold Tabourin, was a key figure in the history of Champagne. At the end of the 19th century, he was sponsored by his employer, Auguste Devaux, and sent to Champagne to study oenology. Following Devaux’s death in 1894 , Tabourin founded the Veuve A. Devaux champagne house , which enjoyed great success during the Belle Époque. Once the children of Veuve Devaux had come of age, he left the house to devote himself, together with his son, entirely to the development of the G.H. Martel & Cie brand .

In 1979, the house was taken overby Ernest Emile Rapeneau. Today, it is run by the fourth generation of the Rapeneau family and sells more than 2 million bottles a year in France and across Europe.

The 1961 vintage in Champagne

The 1961 vintage is regarded in Champagne as exceptionally elegant and long-lived. The weather conditions were ideal for a slow, complete ripening of the grapes whilst preserving brilliant acidity. Champagnes from this vintage are renowned for their finesse, delicate effervescence and enormous ageing potential. The wines have often retained a remarkable freshness and, over time, develop complex aromas of brioche, honey and dried fruit.

Sensory prognosis (with perfect storage)

After over 60 years of bottle ageing, this Champagne has transformed its youthful freshness into a complex, multi-layered maturity. The following description is based on the typical profile of an excellently aged vintage Champagne from this vintage.

Bubbles & Colour

  • Perlage: Due to its age , the perlage is likely to be fine, but less dense than in a young champagne. The mousse is creamy and highly elegant.

  • Colour: A deep, radiant golden yellow with amber and coppery highlights – a sign of decades of ageing.

Nose

The bouquet is intense, complex and characterised by a fascinating blend of ripe fruit, yeasty notes and refined oxidative aromas.

  • Autolysis & Maturation: Dominant aromas of brioche, butter biscuits, toasted almonds, honeycomb and caramel.

  • Dried fruit: Dried apricots, mirabelle plum jam, orange zest.

  • Mineral notes: A cool, chalky minerality and a subtle hint of ginger and saffron.

Palate

  • Texture: Silky, creamy and of medium density. The former youthful sharpness has given way to a soft, enveloping texture.

  • Acidity: Still lively and supportive. The brilliant acidity of the 1961 vintage is the secret to its longevity and lends the wine an astonishing freshness and length.

  • Flavour: A harmonious blend of brioche, honey, ripe citrus fruits and a salty, mineral note.

  • Finish: Long, complex and exceptionally elegant. The lingering notes of nuts, pastries and a mineral freshness remain in the memory for a long time.

Rarity & Market

The 1961 Cuvée Henry Léopold is an absolute rarity. It appears on the market only extremely rarely. The bottle described here (375 ml) is on offer at Jahrhundertweine.de for €295.00. The fill level is described as ‘into neck’ and the condition of the label and capsule as ‘very good’.

Drinking maturity & recommendation
