Tasting note: Freiherr Langwerth von Simmern - Eltviller Sonnenberg Pinot Noir dry 1985

Winery & Site:
The Freiherr Langwerth von Simmern winery, a traditional estate in the Rheingau, cultivates the renowned Eltviller Sonnenberg site. The steep, south-facing slate and clay soils lend the Pinot Noir a mineral structure and elegant complexity.

Vintage 1985:
A vintage with a moderate climate that produced fine, long-lived wines. After almost four decades of ageing, this Pinot Noir displays the finesse and longevity of a well-aged Rheingau red wine.

Appearance:
Deep garnet red with ripe, amber-coloured reflections on the rim. Clear and brilliant, slight viscosity indicates a mature texture.

Nose:
A complex bouquet of dried cherries, plums and cranberries, surrounded by tertiary aromas such as leather, tobacco leaf and saffron. Earthy nuances (forest floor, autumn leaves) and a subtle truffle note unfold underneath. A hint of cedar wood is reminiscent of the wine's barrel-aged youth.

Palate:
The velvety tannins are fully integrated, accompanied by a lively acidity that gives the wine a surprising freshness. The palate is dominated by ripe wild berries, liquorice and dried herbs, harmoniously interwoven with smoky accents and a hint of bitter chocolate. The minerality of the Sonnenberg shimmers in the background.

Finish:
Long-lasting and structured, with a lingering finish of leather, autumn spices and a subtle saltiness. The elegance of the ageing process lingers in the memory.

Overall impression:
A timeless Pinot Noir that demonstrates the strength of the Rheingau terroir. Despite its age, the wine retains its vitality, masterfully combining primary fruit and tertiary complexity. A wine for connoisseurs that tells the story of the growing region.

Drinking recommendation:
Serve at 14-16°C with game dishes, mushroom risotto or mature Comté cheese. Decant carefully before opening to separate any sediment.

Rating:
★★★★☆ (3-4/5) - A rare gem that emphasises the potential of German Pinot Noir. Maturity has ennobled it without losing its soul.
