Ducal Vintage Port 1957 - Vieilli en Fût (matured in wood)

The Ducal Vintage Port 1957 with the additional designation "Vieilli en Fût" is an extremely rare rarity among matured port wines. While classic Vintage Ports only spend two to three years in wooden barrels and then mature for decades in the bottle, this wine was left in oak barrels for an exceptionally long period. The designation "Vieilli en Fût" (French for "barrel-aged") indicates an oxidative ageing process that fundamentally distinguishes the character of the wine from a bottle-aged Vintage Port - it is closer to a very old Tawny or Colheita Port, but retains the powerful structure of a vintage wine.

Appearance:
The wine shows a deep, mahogany-coloured amber with a broad, olive-green rim. The colour is completely clear, without turbidity, which speaks for decades of barrel ageing and careful storage. A fine, slightly viscous film forms in the glass.

Nose:
The aroma is impressively dense and complex. Notes of caramelised nuts - walnut, hazelnut and almond - are dominant, followed by dried fruits such as dates, figs and sultanas. Oxidation has brought out subtle spicy accents: cinnamon, nutmeg, gingerbread and a hint of coffee. Behind this, toffee, orange peel jam and a subtle sherry-like note unfold. Alcohol and fruit are harmoniously interwoven with the wood notes.

Palate:
On the palate, the port is soft, round and extremely smooth. The initial sweetness is still clearly noticeable, but the fine, almost fused acidity makes it elegant and not sticky. The tannins are completely broken down, instead a light, oily texture carries the flavours of walnut oil, caramel, brown sugar and ripe quinces. The fruit has completely given way to the tertiary flavours, with oxidative notes now dominating. The alcohol (estimated at around 20%) is perfectly integrated and pleasantly warming.

Finish:
The finish is very long, warm and persistent. A fine, bitter chocolate and orange zest lingers on the tongue, accompanied by a light spiciness of allspice and dry herbs. The sweetness fades slowly and leaves a feeling of maturity and fullness.

Conclusion:
The Ducal Vintage Port 1957 "Vieilli en Fût" is an exceptional borderline specimen: It combines the powerful substance of a vintage with the complex, oxidative elegance of a decades-old tawny. Such wines were often bottled for special markets (e.g. France) or private cellars. Today, these bottles are practically untraceable - a delight for lovers of extreme wood ageing, showing how a great vintage port develops under the influence of oxygen and oak over more than half a century. If you are lucky enough to open an intact bottle, you will experience port wine as a completely independent, almost sherry-like greatness.
