Dr Bürklin-Wolf – Gaisböhl Riesling Spätlese dry 1999: A monument to the Palatinate

The 1999 Ruppertsberger Gaisböhl Riesling Spätlese dry from the Dr Bürklin-Wolf winery is an exceptional wine that embodies the very pinnacle of German Riesling culture and embodies the quiet grandeur of an underrated vintage. The estate in Wachenheim an der Weinstraße looks back on a history spanning over 400 years and is one of the most renowned names in the Palatinate. Bettina Bürklin-von Guradze has been running the estate since 1990 and ushered in a new era with the transition to biodynamic viticulture – in 2005, the estate became the first in Germany to receive Biodyvin certification.

At the heart of this wine lies the Ruppertsberger Gaisböhlvineyard – the estate’s exclusive monopole vineyard. Of the total 8 hectares, only 5.2 hectares are classified as VDP.GROSSE LAGE. The name Gaisböhl derives from a former goat pasture (“Geißbühl”) and dates back to the Middle Ages. The south-facing vineyard at the foot of the Mittelhaardt is the only ‘Große Lage’ east of the Weinstraße. The soils, consisting of red sandstone, sandy loam and calcareous marl, lend the wine its immense body and a refined acidity.

The 1999 vintage was characterised by good conditions in the Palatinate. A tasting note from K&L Wine Merchants dating from 2009 describes the wine as a “Grosses Gewächs-level wine direct from the winery’s cellar” with “tremendous acidity and length” and compares it to a “beam of light” – an expression of its brilliant clarity and precision. The 86 points awarded by Stephen Brook at a tasting in 2001 reflect the youthful rigour this wine displayed in its early years.

After more than two decades of ageing, this 1999 Gaisböhl is now at the peak of its maturity. The primary fruit has receded into the background, giving way to the typical tertiary aromas of a great Riesling: notes of ripe citrus, Mirabelle plum, delicate herbs and a pronounced minerality. On the palate, there is a well-integrated acidity with impressive length and a salty, mineral finish. For lovers of great Palatinate Rieslings, this wine is an extraordinary experience – a liquid monument to one of Germany’s most significant vineyards.
