Domaine de la Maligne – Coteaux du Layon 1959: A rare treasure from the heart of Anjou
The 1959 Coteaux du Layon from Domaine de la Maligne is an exceptional wine that combines the quiet grandeur of a legendary vintage with the allure of one of France’s finest sweet wine appellations. Domaine de la Maligne is situated in the heart of the Coteaux du Layon, an appellation in Anjou whose vineyards stretch along the River Layon. The vineyards in the surrounding area – including the villages of Tigné, Martigné-Briand and Maligné – are among the historic core areas of this appellation, where the vines are rooted in calcareous clay soils with traces of slate and gravel. The wines, made exclusively from Chenin Blanc, are produced through the influence of noble rot (Botrytis cinerea), which imparts an exceptional concentration of sugar, acidity and aromas to the grapes. Coteaux du Layon is famous for its straw-yellow to golden wines with aromas of peach, apricot, honey and acacia, which are characterised by remarkable roundness and fullness and possess exceptional ageing potential.
The 1959 vintage was an exceptional year in Anjou. For Coteaux du Layon, it is described as a great vintage, and tasting notes for wines from this vintage highlight a remarkable freshness and youthfulness that is still evident even after decades. A 1959 Coteaux du Layon was described in a tasting as ‘tout à fait bon’, with a ‘curieusement pâle, jaune clair’ colour and a nose that initially seemed rather unexpressive – possibly due to an initial excess of sulphur – but which showed good balance and ‘grande jeunesse’ on the palate. Another tasting of a 1959 Coteaux du Layon describes a golden, amber-coloured robe that gradually deepened with oxidation.
The Domaine de la Maligne itself is a small, family-run winery that is rarely mentioned in wine literature – which makes the wine all the more of a rarity. The 1959 bottle is likely to date from a time when the appellation was still strongly characterised by traditional craftsmanship and producers pressed their wines in small quantities, often without modern cellar technology. After more than sixty years of ageing in the bottle, this wine is now at the peak of its maturity: the primary fruit has receded into the background, replaced by complex tertiary aromas – notes of dried apricots, honey, caramel, nuts and a hint of quince, underpinned by the petrol note typical of mature Chenin Blanc wines and a delicate minerality. On the palate, there is a harmonious balance of sweetness and acidity which, despite its age, retains a remarkable vibrancy and length.
For lovers of great sweet wines, this 1959 Domaine de la Maligne Coteaux du Layonis an extraordinary experience – a liquid testament to a bygone era of Anjou viticulture and a rare find from one of the greatest vintages of the 20th century.
