Product information

Domaine Leflaive is inextricably linked with the elite of Burgundy’s white wines, and the Bienvenues-Bâtard-Montrachet Grand Cru from the 1980s, particularly the 1980 and 1988 vintages, stands as a fascinating testament to this great tradition. These wines date from a period prior to the famous full-scale transition to biodynamics in the 1990s led by Anne-Claude Leflaive, yet they already bear the estate’s unmistakable hallmark: uncompromising precision and a deep commitment to the terroir.

The estate, which has been rooted in Puligny-Montrachet since 1717, was shaped in its modern form at the beginning of the 20th century by Joseph Leflaive. According to legend, this brilliant naval engineer – who was involved in the construction of the first French submarine – returned to his homeland to replant the vineyards devastated by phylloxera and lay the foundations for the domaine’s worldwide renown. This dedication to the craft was carried on into the third generation by his granddaughter Anne-Claude and her cousin Olivier, who took the estate to the very pinnacle of the Burgundian hierarchy. The wines from this era are now regarded as rare cuvées that leave an unforgettable impression.

The domaine’s Grands Crus, which include the Bienvenues-Bâtard-Montrachet, are the result of a perfect interplay between poor soils, an ideal hillside location and excellent drainage. The 1.15-hectare single plot responsible for the Bienvenues-Bâtard-Montrachet is situated entirely within Puligny and was first planted with vines as early as 1958. These exceptionally old vines form the basis for wines that seek not so much the opulent richness of their famous neighbour, Bâtard-Montrachet, but rather an exquisite finesse and impressive aromatic complexity. Characteristic of this wine is a refined bouquet reminiscent of marzipan, fern, exotic fruits, ambergris and white blossoms. On the palate, it displays a rather restrained acidity, which is nevertheless underpinned by an intense sweetness and exceptional length.

Although few specific tasting notes are available for the 1980s vintages, the existing reports underscore its legendary status. For the 1988 vintage, *Falstaff* awarded 92 points at a tasting in 2006 and described a pale yellow colour with notes of damp hazelnuts and tobacco, followed by a sweet, hazelnut-driven and mineral texture on the palate. This profile is consistent with the general characterisation of the Bienvenues-Bâtard-Montrachet as a wine that, whilst offering less power than the Montrachet, possesses greater finesse and elegance. The wines from this domaine are renowned for their balance, structure and the pure expression of the terroir – qualities achieved over the decades through a long, natural fermentation in oak barrels followed by two years’ cellaring.

The 1980 vintage is now regarded as a sought-after rarity, whilst the 1988 vintage is particularly prized at auctions due to its outstanding quality and excellent condition. This appreciation confirms the enduring appeal of these wines, which promise an unforgettable tasting experience for lovers of great white Burgundies.
