Domaine Arlaud Père et Fils, based in the heart of Morey-Saint-Denis, has developed over recent decades into one of Burgundy’s most prestigious estates. The estate was founded in 1942 by Joseph Arlaud, who hailed from the Ardèche and married a Burgundian woman whose family already owned vineyards . Their son Hervé took over the management in 1982 and expanded the domaine before passing it on to his three children. Today, the 15-hectare estate is run by the third generation – Bertille, Cyprien and Romain – who continue to uphold the house’s uncompromising standards of quality .
The 1999 Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru ‘Les Sentiers’ comes from a small plot of just 23 ares, whose vines were planted as early as 1966 . The soils are calcareous and clay-rich, lending the wine its characteristic structure. The winemaking follows a traditional approach: fermentation takes place with natural yeasts, and ageing in oak barrels – a quarter of which are new – lasts 14 to 18 months .
The result is a Premier Cru of exceptional purity and elegance. The wine unfolds intense aromas of red and black fruits, typical of the Chambolle-Musigny appellation . On the palate, the tannins are extremely silky and finely woven; the body is subtle and supple, without losing any of its presence. A lively yet pleasant acidity lends the wine freshness and a long, lingering finish . Critics praise the wines of Domaine Arlaud for their clarity and describe them as ‘liquid hedonism’ . The 1999 vintage, now at its peak, is an outstanding example of the estate’s ability to translate the delicate terroir of Chambolle-Musigny into a wine of great finesse and depth.
