Château de Beaucastel – Châteauneuf-du-Pape 1988: A Rhône classic at the peak of its maturity
The Château de Beaucastel Châteauneuf-du-Pape 1988 is an exceptional wine from one of the most prestigious estates in the southern Rhône Valley and embodies the Perrin family’s unique philosophy in a great, mature vintage. Château de Beaucastel looks back on a centuries-old history dating back to the 16th century, when Pierre de Beaucastel acquired land in Coudoulet in 1549. Following the devastation of the vineyards by phylloxera at the end of the 19th century, Pierre Tramier acquired the estate in 1909 and replanted the vineyards before handing it over to his son-in-law, Pierre Perrin. Today, Beaucastel is run by the fourth generation of the Perrin family, namely the brothers François and Jean Perrin. Their father, Jacques Perrin, a highly regarded winemaker in the Rhône Valley, established three guiding principles for the wines: natural production, a high proportion of the Mourvèdre grape variety, and the avoidance of modern techniques that might distort the wine’s natural character.
The Beaucastel vineyard covers 110 hectares and is situated on the northern boundary of the Châteauneuf-du-Pape appellation, where the Mistral creates a distinctive microclimate. The terroir is archetypal of the appellation’s finest sites: rounded pebbles on the surface, with sand, clay and limestone beneath. The vines are old and have been organically cultivated since the 1960s, allowing the roots to grow to an exceptional depth. Beaucastel cultivates all thirteen grape varieties authorised by the appellation, with Grenache (30 per cent) and Mourvèdre (30 per cent) being the dominant varieties.
The 1988 vintage was a magnificent one, characterised by some rain in early September followed by fine conditions right through to the end of the harvest. Winemaking is carried out using traditional methods: Each grape variety is harvested and vinified separately by hand, with the reductive varieties Mourvèdre and Syrah fermented in oak barrels and the oxidative varieties in enamelled concrete tanks. Once malolactic fermentation is complete, the Perrin family blends the cuvée, which is then aged for a year in oak barrels before being bottled.
The tasting notes paint a picture of a complex, profound wine at the peak of its maturity. Robert Parker described the 1988 vintage as ‘firmly structured and elegant’ with sweet, sweaty aromas of horse and leather, possibly derived from Brett. He highlighted its medium-bodied, earthy and robust structure, noting that the wine resembles the 1995 vintage in many respects. Jancis Robinson described it as “elegant and restrained, with lovely fruit and structure” and emphasised the concentrated black cherry and spice aromas, as well as the fine tannins. Wine Spectator praised the “focused black cherry and refined spice aromas” as well as the full body with fine tannins.
On the nose, the 1988 Beaucastel reveals aromas of ripe, preserved red fruits, accompanied by floral notes and a hint of alcohol. On the palate, it is round and dense, with a lively freshness and a long, concentrated finish. Community tasting notes describe notes of tobacco, figs and leather, as well as a hint of truffle and wild mushrooms. The average rating on CellarTracker is 92 points, based on over 236 tasting notes.
For lovers of great Rhône wines, the 1988 Château de Beaucastel is a wine of impressive depth and complexity, bearing the hallmark of one of France’s greatest estates and currently within an excellent drinking window.
