Château de Rayne Vigneau – Sauternes 1er Cru Classé 2000

The Château de Rayne Vigneau 1er Cru Classé Sauternes 2000 is a wine that embodies the quiet grandeur of one of the oldest Premier Cru estates in the Sauternais. The estate is situated in the commune of Bommes on a gravelly hilltop which, after Yquem, is the second-highest point in the appellation. Its origins date back to the early 17th century, when Gabriel de Vigneau founded the estate. A particularly significant event was the marriage of his son Étienne to Jeanne Sauvage, the daughter of the then owner of Château d’Yquem. In 1855, the estate was included in the Bordeaux classification as a Premier Cru Classé. Since 2015, it has been part of Financière Trésor du Patrimoine.

The 84 hectares of vineyards are situated on a geological mosaic of gravel-clay ridges, sandy soils and limestone subsoil. The vines, with an average age of 30 years, are planted with 74 per cent Sémillon, 24 per cent Sauvignon Blanc and 2 per cent Muscadelle. According to legend, the soil is so rich in gemstones – agate, amethyst, onyx and sapphire – that the deep golden colour of the wines is considered an expression of this terroir. Wine production follows strict tradition: the botrytised grapes are harvested by hand in four to eight passes and only picked when they are in a perfectly botrytised state. Following slow pressing and 24 hours’ settling, the must ferments in barriques, followed by 12 to 18 months’ ageing, 40 to 50 per cent of which takes place in new oak barrels.

The 2000 vintage benefited from favourable climatic conditions. The grapes reached excellent ripeness, and the growing cycle resulted in harmonious overripening due to the effect of noble rot. The tasting notes paint a picture of a wine at an advanced stage of maturity: the colour displays a luminous, intense gold, which over time transitions to deep golden hues with subtle orange highlights. The nose opens with candied citrus fruits such as mandarin, accompanied by apricot and honey, enriched by subtle spicy notes of cinnamon as well as vanilla and almond from the barrel ageing. On the palate, it is opulent, sweet and full-bodied, with a rich, almost oily texture that is perfectly balanced by ripe acidity – a harmonious finish with lingering candied fruit flavours. Wine Spectator awarded the wine 90/100 points.

The estate recommends serving the wine at 6 to 8 °C. It has reached full maturity and is at or slightly past its peak – a wine that should be enjoyed without delay to fully appreciate its refined complexity. For lovers of great Sauternes, this 2000 Rayne Vigneau offers a rare opportunity to experience a Premier Cru Classé from a solid vintage at the peak of its maturity.
