In the heart of Margaux, where the gravelly hills of the Garonne still breathe the warmth of centuries past, a wine emerged in 1959 that to this day resonates like a belated echo of that golden era. Château Rauzan-Ségla, founded in 1661 by Pierre de Rauzan, looks back on an eventful history. Elevated to the ranks of Bordeaux’s finest wines in 1855 as a Second Growth (Deuxième Grand Cru Classé) in the 1855 classification, the estate experienced turbulent times in the 20th century – and yet the legendary 1959 vintage gifted the world a wine of timeless beauty.

That year’s production was minuscule: a mere 35 barrels were filled – a hint of infinity, captured in oak. The wine, a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Petit Verdot and Cabernet Franc, matured in the château’s cool cellars, where it spent the decades like a silent dreamer. The 1959 bottle, whose label still bears the old spelling with an ‘S’, is today a rare gem: At a Sotheby’s auction in 2021, a six-bottle case was estimated at 1,500 to 2,000 pounds – a price that reflects the awe inspired by this masterpiece.

The critic René Gabriel described it in a blind tasting as ‘medium-dark wine red with a still ruby sheen’ – a play of colours reminiscent of the youth of an ancient fairy tale . The nose reveals raisins, light tobacco and subtle hints of honey, whilst on the palate the wine is “quite meaty, still astringent due to dry tannins, full-bodied, long-lasting” . Another reviewer reports aromas of plums, leather, truffles, orange zest and black pepper – a bouquet that breathes the soul of a summer past. CellarTracker users awarded it 93 points and marvelled at the “astonishingly youthful” colour of the wine, whilst others praised it as “smooth yet sophisticated”.
