Tasting note: Château Potensac 1988 (Médoc, Bordeaux)

The 1988 Potensac is a classic, more traditional Cru Bourgeoisfrom the Médoc - a vintage that was considered structured and long-lived in its youth. Today, over 30 years later, it shows the typical development of a mature Bordeaux with earthy complexity and restrained elegance.

Sensory analysis

Colour:

  • Medium-intense garnet red with distinct brick and orange tones - signs of advanced maturity.

Nose:

  • Classic Médoc aromatics: blackcurrant (cassis), dried plum, tobacco leaf, damp forest earth.

  • Tertiary notes: Leather, old wooden chest, a hint of truffle and smoke extract.

  • Wood influence: cedar, slightly rancid walnut (typical of long matured Bordeaux wines).

  • No more dominant fruit, but a smoky-mineral spiciness (graphite, iron).

Palate:

  • Medium-bodied with a lean texture - less opulent than modern Potensac vintages.

  • Acidic, but not harsh, with already softly polished tannins.

  • Flavours of dried herbs (laurel), black tea, cranberry and a slight bitterness (fine cocoa).

  • Length: Moderately long, with a dry, slightly tart and spicy finish (pepper, iron).

Overall impression:
A mature, rather rustic Médoc - not a spectacular wine, but an honest Bordeaux full of character with typical terroir expression.

Rating & ageing potential

  • Parker (RP): 87/100 ("Solid, classic Médoc")

  • Drinking window: Now - 2028 (already fully developed, should not be stored for too long).

  • Decant: 30-45 minutes to remove sediment and open up flavours.

Serving recommendation:

  • Leg of lamb with rosemary

  • Duck confit with olives

  • Mild hard cheeses (e.g. Cantal or Gouda)

Conclusion:

A typical old Médoc - not as complex as a Grand Cru Classé, but with charm and authenticity. Anyone who appreciates traditional, earthy Bordeaux wines will like it.

Tip:If you have a bottle, open it soon - the wine has reached its peak and shouldn't be left lying around forever.
