The 1995 vintage is considered one of the best of the 1990s in the entire Gironde region - warm, dry and ideal for slow, complete ripening of the grapes. In Pomerol, Château Pétrus benefited from its outstanding terroir on the clay plateau and produced a wine of exceptional concentration, depth and structure. The 1995 is a classic, great Pétrus that combines the power of a ripe vintage with the elegance of the house.
The glass shows a deep, dense ruby red with light garnet-coloured reflections on the rim - a sign of increasing maturity, but still without any significant signs of ageing. The bouquet is beguilingly complex and multi-layered: initially dominated by ripe dark berries such as blackberry, cassis and black cherry. Gradually, notes of truffle, fine liquorice, cedar and fine tobacco emerge. These are joined by flavours of stewed plums, violets and a hint of roasted coffee. The integration of wood and fruit is masterful - the barrique note is completely fused and only adds a delicate spiciness.
On the palate, the 1995 reveals its impressive side: powerful, but never ponderous. The tannins are firm, dense and of the highest quality - they are already well integrated, but still give the wine enormous ageing potential. The acidity is present and provides a lively, almost taut structure. The fruit concentration is exceptionally high without being clumsy. The texture is velvety yet grippy - a Pétrus of classic stature. The finish is very long, complex and characterised by fine roasted aromas, dark chocolate and a hint of minerality.
Château Pétrus 1995 is currently in a great drinking phase, but still has enough reserves for many more years. It is not a wine for immediate enjoyment, but one that rewards patience. If you open it today, you should decant it for at least two to three hours or let it breathe in a carafe. Serving temperature: 16-18 °C. A monumental Pomerol that impressively reflects the greatness of the 1995 vintage - without doubt one of the great wines of the decade.
