Château Pétrus, Pomerol 1994
The 1994 vintage was a challenge for winegrowers in Bordeaux: a cool, wet summer and difficult flowering led to low yields and the risk of rot was omnipresent. Many wines from the Right Bank were rather light and medium-bodied. However, Château Pétrus succeeded in producing a concentrated, if not overpowering, wine through strict selection and the excellent drainage of its clay plateau.
Today, the 1994 Pétrus shows a medium-deep garnet red colour with the first slight lightening to brick-brown at the edge - a sign of advanced maturity, but still without any fragile signs of ageing. The nose is somewhat reserved at first, then opens up with notes of ripe cherries, plums and cassis. This is accompanied by fine vegetal accents such as light undergrowth and delicate spicy tones of liquorice and dried herbs. Compared to richer vintages, the bouquet is somewhat cooler and more classic, with a subtle mineral note reminiscent of chalk and damp earth.
On the palate, the 1994 is surprisingly elegant and taut. The tannins are firm but already well integrated - they give the wine structure without being harsh. The acidity is present and lively, giving the wine a pleasant freshness. The fruit concentration is remarkable for the difficult vintage, but does not reach the fullness of the great years such as 1989 or 1990. Instead, the wine impresses with its precise line, its fine texture and a medium-long finish with light roasted flavours and a hint of dark chocolate. A slight tart note lingers, which can be typical of cooler vintages.
Overall, the Château Pétrus 1994 is a wine of restraint and class. It has reached its drinking plateau, but can mature for a few more years without any problems. It is not a monumental Pétrus, but one for connoisseurs who appreciate elegance, freshness and subtle complexity. Recommendation: Decant for about an hour, serving temperature 16-18 °C. A noble, down-to-earth Pomerol that combines the strengths of a difficult vintage with the art of the House of Pétrus.
